Ten years ago, a mysterious wine named St. Andrea, known to no one until the award ceremony, won a grand gold medal at the Eger Wine Competition. At the very second of the award’s presentation, the wine’s proud owner, Dr. György Lőrincz, carved a well-earned spot into Hungary’s vino-map. In the same year, he also became the Eger Wine Producer of the Year!
After seven years of this deserved but sudden success, the winemaker’s name is now widely renowned not only in Hungary, but also abroad. The nearly 40-hectare St. Andrea estate is located in the historical wine region of Eger. Their cellars were built into the stunning slopes of Öreghegy, in Egerszalók, where the climatic and soil properties make it possible to give the wine a remarkable character. Regarding grape vintages, they mainly follow the traditions of the Eger wine region respecting local vinicultural and historic traditions.
Their endeavor to reconceive the nature of Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) and traditional Eger wines, with a twist, require consistent vinicultural work. The fruits of their labor, the St. Andrea wines, are somewhat like interesting people; you feel the urge to know more and more about them.
Behind all truly successful people, there’s often a truly supportive special someone. In György’s life, it was his wife and muse, Andrea, who, as well as helping him through everything that got him there, also shed the most tears of joy at the Wine Producer of the Year, 2009 award ceremony.
