Trevor Spiro: A Deeper Breath

The 1996 Olympus International Salon Award winning artist’s photographs will be on view and sale from October 10th, at Kasek Communications’ current showroom.

Smoking, when performed in certain ways, is an art form, a body language involving subliminal communication in which a woman makes important statements about herself as well as expressing feelings for her partner. Despite the health risks, many people associate smoking with the golden age of Hollywood glam, jazz music, fashion, freedom and sexuality – at least, cigarette companies would like us to believe as much.

The relationship between smoking, fashion, music and photography has fascinated Trevor Spiro, a British fashion photographer, for over thirty years, and is a central feature of this exhibition. Since 1998, his widespread multi-media contributions on the Internet have cemented his reputation as an expert in this field.

Were we all fooled by the Hollywood hype, the glitz and the glam that surrounded Dietrich, Hepburn, Bogart and Bacall, the romance of a midnight tête à tête in a café on the Champs-Élysées filled with the scent of Gauloises, or the dark corner of the Whisky a Go Go, the sounds of a lazy saxophone emanating from behind a cloak of cigarette smoke filling lungs with every breath you take? While the health risks of smoking are well known, if not universally accepted, cigarette companies would have us believe that smoking still oozes class, sexuality and maturity, even if the habit shows decreasing social acceptance. Whatever your view, the exhibition’s subject matter is set to provoke passionate debate. Spiro’s images are thought-provoking, allowing you, the viewer, to decide for yourself.

Beyond providing visual satisfaction, the organizers of the exhibition have thought of the more material as well. As a result, there’ll be a fine, ‘Best of Szekszárd’ wine tasting, and local face DJ Curtis will be dishing out the tunes… until the crowd decides to continue the party somewhere else in the city.
