Ferenc Hopp, who saw many exotic, faraway places during his five journeys around the world, was one of the most significant travelers of the 19th century.
Our desire to meet new people and discover new places is as old as mankind. Be it travels abroad or in our own country, be it by train, bicycle, horse or on foot– traveling is essential to life.
A new exhibition, more spectacular and interactive than ever, evokes the exciting life of this traveler, art collector, patron of art, photographer and, last but not least, founder of the museum.
Eighty-nine years ago Ferenc Hopp, in his will, left his Oriental collection to the state. These 4,000 pieces formed the basis of the current collection of 23,000 Chinese, Japanese, Indian, South East Asian, Nepalian, Tibetian, Korean and Middle Eastern pieces. In the present exhibition, 650 of Ferenc Hopp’s most beautiful memories of his journeys evoke the special ambient of the Oriental bazaars, India, South East Asia, China and Japan of the 19th century. Old photographs of the journeys will also be exhibited together with the antique cameras and stereo recordings, so popular of the era.
An exhibition opening will take place with open-air concerts on the Night of Museums!
