I journeyed across Budapest and through various small back streets to find the well-hidden little performance venue, Sín, which has recently moved to a new home, after five years at a former location.
In fact, this is not a regular performance venue, but a rehearsal space for young companies which regularly hosts contemporary dance productions. Tonight is one of these occasions. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. The auditorium consists of two rows of chairs, which are nevertheless filled up completely, and with what appears to be quite an international audience.
Tachyon – Unravelling, choreographed by Rita Góbi, is performed with immense charm, and with the use of some very creative and playful costumes. On entering the intimate performance space, we find various partially or fully unhatched cocoons, which begin to move and hatch into human beings, who in turn start searching for mating partners.
The soundscape is live, created by two of the cocoons, one of which takes an active part in the mating ritual, though the other, sadly, never manages to hatch. This live accompaniment complements the wildlife-esque scenery perfectly with its earthiness.
Tachyon is great fun to watch and the mood is refreshingly playful. The costumes add a stimulating and unusual extra dimension to the dance, and this particular space makes this a wonderfully intimate experience.
