The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
“I want my mummy!” You do? Good, well then you’ve got her/it. Back again for another ripping yarn, this time in Asia, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor sees Brendan Fraser return as explorer Rick O’Connell fighting the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li). The epicness becomes even more so, as the world is about to be plunged into the everlasting control of a 2000-year-old mummy. In case you can’t guess, the mummy is not full of altruistic intensions; he is as bad as a bad guy who’s been frozen away for a couple of millennia to brood over his badness. Foolish archeologist Rick O’Connell woke him up and now he has to right his mistake. The best bit is he has to turn to HIS mummy (and daddy) to help him (because like all posh English men his parents are experts in battling the undead).
The stunts are bolder than a man placing his head into a lion’s mouth while flicking its buttocks with a wet towel; the storyline is as entertaining as a Funzine editor moon-walking across the office; and the special effects are scarier than being trapped in a room with a James Blunt song on a perpetual loop. You know what you’re getting with the Mummy films and you know there’s a reason that they keep on making them. Fun fun fun.

The Dark Knight
Batman Begins was dark, this is dark-defyingly-darker. Director Christopher Nolan and actor Christian Bale team up once again in a film which is being hailed as the best Batman ever. Like the last one, it’s for the fans of the comic not mainstream movie goers. So no more George Clooney, but a crime fighter who is on the edge; fighting the criminals of Gotham and the dilemmas of his moral code. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, he is doing well at dismantling the seedy underworld… that is until a mysterious figure arrives on the scene! The Joker (brilliantly played by Heath Ledger in his last ever movie) quickly begins to terrify the citizens of Gotham and prove a worthy match for Batman. As the film progresses, their struggle increases in intensity and turns personal, as both seem willing to break all the rules by which they live to beat the other once and for all.
We get exciting love triangles, improved technological wizardry and a truly excellent Batman. If you’ve been bored by the recent comic book adaptations then you’ll be glad to know that The Dark Knight is head and shoulders above these. Not a simple good versus evil tale but an interesting exploration into the questions of what’s right and wrong.
