Palace Film Releases: April 24th – May 1st

Fans of Judd Apatow’s comedic productions will be glad to see more vulgar comedy on the screen with this latest endeavor. Following in the style of his other productions such as Superbad and The40 Year Old Virgin, the story is light and the comedic timing essential. Devastated after a breakup with his TV star girlfriend, Peter (Jason Segel) tries to get away by traveling to Hawaii. But Sarah (Kristen Bell) shows up at the same resort with her new boyfriend. The movie is full of all the inappropriate humor one might expect. Several TV actors star in the film, proving themselves to be talents in the genre. Original version at MOM Park only.

A remake of the 1957 original, 3:10 to Yuma updates a classic western for today’s audience. The action never stops as a poor farmer and civil war veteran played by Christian Bale finds himself escorting a notorious outlaw to a train that will take him to a trial in the federal court. Determined to impress his son, he must face the relentless escape efforts and peril of an outlaw gang ready to aid their leader. The chemistry between Bale and Russell Crowe, who plays outlaw Ben Wade, is excellent as they struggle for control of the situation. Courage, pride and respect are central to the story and add depth to the shoot em’ up excitement expected of a western.

There’s a new superhero on the block and he’s ready to kick some butt. Robert Downey Jr. brings Marvel Comic’s Iron Man to life on the big screen with the help of serious special effects. Tony Stark (Downey) is a billionaire weapons manufacturer for the U.S. government. When he is captured at a test site, he is forced to make weapons for the enemy, but instead he creates a power suit of armor to escape. Upon his return home, consumed by power and revenge, he revises the armor to become Iron Man. In his newfound role, he vows to fight against evil. This is sure to be an action hit to add to the success of the previous Marvel adaptations. Original version at MOM Park only.

Based on the true story of a few of prestigious MIT’s most brilliant minds, 21 is about a team of students who head to Las Vegas to take on the house. Armed with a card counting scheme, complete with a complex system of signals, they have figured out how to earn loads of cash that will pay for their tuition and a lot more. While the movie embellishes the story for the big screen, it’s the underlying fact of reality that gives the extra action and Hollywood gimmicks their real interest. Kevin Spacey is great as the unconventional math professor supporting the team. This is an enjoyable film that sticks to a good plot without getting too carried away for the sake of novelty.
