Jolly Japanese

It’s not only a mug of super-cinnamonish mulled wine that can make our November less grey and gloomy. Our personal hint is better than chocolate, Vitamin C or a bunch of oranges… It’s two hours of ‘twilighting’ on a Japanese seaside. No worries, though, you don’t need to travel thousands of miles for that. It’s enough to sink into a comfy armchair at the movies with your fave cinema snacks, sit back and enjoy Megane! Here are our ten reasons why to watch this delightful Japanese movie…

No. 1: The scenes where they eat (there’re a lot of them!). By the end of the movie, you feel the urge to rush to the closest Japanese restaurant to stuff yourself silly. How unfortunate they only sell popcorn and nachos at the movies!

No. 2: You’ll understand how big a deal it is to be allowed to sit on the back of someone’s bicycle

No 3. It’s the only time ever that you won’t get annoyed by a five-minute-long mandolin duet.

No. 4: You can learn the greatest ever morning exercise, Merci-training! It’s the best, even if you don’t have a sandy beach at hand. You’ll especially love the hugging bit at the end.

No. 5: Why is Kakigōri so special? It’s nothing but shaved ice flavored with syrup and still… Get the secret flavor from the movie!

No 6: The art of ‘Twilighting’. No need to say more.

No 7: If something seems boring to you for two minutes, try it for two hours, you’ll love it!

No 8: The movie’s like a good book. As there aren’t many long dialogues (not even one, actually) or much detailed info on the characters, you can have your imagination contribute to the story, too.

No 9. The oh-so-lovely white sandy beaches and the ocean breeze that you can feel on your face. (You won’t even be disturbed by the outside November rain and the eager air conditioning in the cinema)

No. 10: Watch it in its original language with subtitles for an off-beat, little Japanese lesson. By the end, you’ll be amazed at how many different meanings the word ‘hei’ has.
