– FUNZINE Club Special Theater Night –
Always on the pulse of contemporary English language theater in Budapest, Merlin Theater will be staging British playwright Simon Stephens’ Pornography.
Set in London in July 2005, the play spans the few days between the L
ive 8 concert, the announcement that London had been awarded the Olympics, and the tragic July 7th bombings, through the everyday lives of several characters – common folk, whose disappointment at life flags up a menagerie of social problems. The terrorist himself also appears, as someone who’s a part of the everyday life of the world presented, as a member of its social system. Frustration, disappointment, monotonic weekdays and repressed aggression define the lives on stage, creating a state of equality amongst the characters, whose lives are presented as parallel fragments of everyday urban life.
The two English-speaking companies of Merlin (Madhouse and Scallabouche) have worked collaboratively upon the performance, along with guest actors, forming a cast of five. And, with the story and the form of the play being so present-day, contemporary tools like video projection, visual effects and music are an integral part of this multi-facetted production.
After Pornography catching our eye (and not just because of the name), we decided to join forces with the production and present a special FUNZINE Club event, and on December 14th we’ll be offering a complete, theatrical package. FUNZINE card holders who purchase a ticket for the performance will receive a special ticket which will include a free welcome drink before the play. It will also include entry to an audience discussion with the actors and the play’s director following the performance.
