Spring’s here, which means another offering of Hungarian films cherry-picked by FUNZINE and Odeon, just for you. We’ll be screening them with English subtitles, followed by an opportunity to talk with those involved about the making of their big screen creations. When underground tries to sneak into mainstream, sometimes, it seems, it ends up morphing into a huge hit. Zsombor Dyga’s 2009 dramedy, Question in Details has not only won the Best Director and the Best Actor Awards at the 41st Hungarian Film Week, but also got the Audience’s Choice. It’s a slow simple-plotted, character-focused work of a genre that hasn’t really been popular in Magyar mainstream cinema so far. Still, it’s rocking cinemas through B-town. Why? Because it’s so human, it’s so us.
When Eszti and Zoli meet on a not-so-successful date, two very different worlds meet. The date’s on the verge of tragedy when Gábor, Eszti’s arrogant, in-your-face brother, turns up and an old secret gets revealed…
A story of an awkward blind date that ends up in life changing turns. Three people with walls in-between them. And walls that crumble down eventually during a single, cold winter’s night. And all of this is topped by the amazing performance of three Hungarian talents, a jazzy soundtrack and Zsombor Dyga’s award-winning directional skills.
