There are a number of folk traditions carried out in connection with the Christmas and new year period. The art of lebkuchen-making was presumably introduced by our ancestors from the Etelköz, and lebkuchens (cakes) bore huge popularity, people even gave them as gifts on special occasions.Lebkuchens were traditionally baked by housewives, however, as they gained popularity, guilds started to make them. Lebkuchen-moulds were crafted by metalworkers and the giving of lebkuchen as a present has now become a festive tradition.
Another year-end habit is eating lentils in the new year. People believe that doing this will ensure plenty of money in the new year. Others believe that whatever happens on New Year’s Day is likely to repeat itself, all year long.
Maybe New Year folk habits have developed from the belief that all acts repeat themselves in the future? This belief makes people do things that they hope will happen time and time again in the future. Many folk traditions have already disappeared, but the tradition of lebkuchen and New Year’s lentils still remains.
