The Holocaust has been one of the most traumatic events of modern history, if not the most traumatic. More than 60 years after the genocide, the industrialized mass murder committed by the Nazis and their collaborators can still appear virtually incomprehensible.
The Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest was opened in 2004 with the aim of setting a memorial to the more than half a million Jewish and non-Jewish victims of the Hungarian Holocaust as well as to pay tribute to those who had the courage to fight against human viciousness and indifference.
The permanent exhibition From Deprivation of Rights to Genocide presents the horrifying dehumanizing process, while important questions are raised about responsibility and the aftermath of destruction. With the dominant motif being the relationship between a state and its citizens, it portrays the Holocaust in Hungary from the first Anti-Jewish laws of 1938.
