Finnagora’s May-June exhibition presents printmaking and mixed media works from young Finnish-American artist couple Joseph James and Merja Isomaa-James.
Joseph James is exhibiting dry point, collagraph and silk screen prints which involve researching the possibilities and processes of printmaking. The idea is to build an exhibition through one image. The 12 prints of Joseph James are all based on a single blind contour drawing of an engine. Through the process of translation, which is often necessary in creating printing plates, the drawing is broken down in the parts and the recombined in these prints, to create composition.
Merja Isomaa-James is exhibiting 12 small scale mixed media works on wood. Merja Isomaa-James’ narrative works offer to the viewer the possibility to build their own stories. Figures and color combine in the works suggesting fantastic, abstract worlds.
The artists are both interested in offering the audience the opportunity to use their imaginations. Their approach to artmaking is similar in that they allow the working process to guide them towards the final result.
Finnagora is the centre of Finnish culture, research and business in Hungary.
