Coffee Close Up – Brewing

The fineness of the grains determines the mixture to be prepared using different devices. Going from the gross grains to the small ones, I suggest the following machines: Filter Drip, Neapolitan Flip, Percolator, French press, and Espresso.

In Germany the most-consumed coffee is the long (weak) coffee, prepared with the Filter Drip. The most common type of percolator used today is known as an espresso coffee pot or, in some regions, especially Italy, as a Moka or Moka pot. In Italy, Spain and Portugal, the moka pot is the most popular way of brewing coffee at home, and its usage has spread to the USA.

The Neapolitan flip, or Napoletana, is a drip brew coffee maker for the stovetop. It consists of a bottom section filled with water, a filter section in the middle filled with coarsely-ground coffee, and an upside-down pot placed on the top. When the water boils, the entire three-part coffee maker is flipped over to let the water filter through the coffee grounds.

A French press consists of a narrow cylindrical jug usually made of glass or clear plastic, equipped with a lid and a ‘plunger’ which fits tightly in the cylinder and which has a fine wire or nylon mesh acting as a filter. Coffee is brewed by placing the coffee and water together, leaving to brew for a few minutes, and then depressing the plunger to separate the coffee at the bottom of the jug.

Coffee: Kona Coffee is the market name for a variety of coffee (Coffea Arabica) cultivated on the slopes of Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa in the North and South Kona Districts of the big island of Hawaii. Only coffee from the Kona Districts can be described as ‘Kona’. Coffee requires a very specific combination of sun, soil, and water and is successfully grown in only a limited number of locations around the world. The Kona weather pattern of bright sunny mornings, humid rainy afternoons, and mild nights create favorable coffee growing conditions. Pure Kona coffee is considered one of the premium specialty coffees of the world.
