Fresh local party series Chicken Exit kicked off in September of last year. Dubbed “An alternative queer party especially for girls”, it’s headed by local female DJs with a taste for indie and electro. We spoke to its founder and member, DJ Macsek.
How did Chicken Exit start?
We got the idea in the summer of 2009, and the first party took place in September, in Yes Pub. It came as a solution to a serious problem caused by the poor quality of music other parties organized for girls offered. We saw a strong need for a change. The lack of female DJ collectives and queer bands on stage also made us interested in doing it.
Who’s involved in the group?
Our crew’s been continuously evolving since the first party, but now we have permanent members. Along with myself, there are two more DJs, Szuszu and Lady Gagarin.
Are you all Hungarian?
Yes, we’re all Hungarian girls, but we plan to cooperate with DJanes from Vienna. They have a party similar to ours, named Quote.
What music can we expect from a Chicken Exit night?
We advertise Chicken Exit as an indie-electro-alternative party, so this is the main direction we try to follow. Tracks include established bands and undiscovered artists. Szuszu’s responsible for playing alt-rock, especially popular tracks. Lady Gagarin mostly deals with indie, and she prefers to experiment with barely known artists and new releases. I try to keep the balance between these two and spice them up with electro tunes and Hungarian representatives of the genre.
What parties do you have planned for the next few weeks?
On May 8th, Szuszu will represent us on a boat party at Blue River Pub, organized by the CEU students learning gender studies for the occasion of an LGBT conference. The next official Chicken Exit party is going to be on May 15th at RS9 Klub.
What kind of venues do your parties typically take place in?
We tried out many different places, like Merlin, Corvintető and Yes Pub, and we’re sticking to RS9 for now, but I guess it’s not the final station. The summer’s coming soon, so we’re up for open-air parties, too.
What kind of a crowd do you draw?
Basically, it’s a party for girls, but that doesn’t mean we’re against boys – girls can bring their gay friends along. Guests are mostly between 18 and 25 who have expectations of higher standards. We want to encourage women from every age group to come.
What’s been the best Chicken Exit party so far?
My favorite was the first one at Corvintető in December. Many girls were interested and had a great time with us. I can proudly say that it was the turning point in our history. A huge break through, so to say. And we can assure you, it’s not over yet.
