We spoke to DJs Kisdubos and Százalék about the four-year-old Budapest party series, Brutkó Diszkó, and how they’ve been shaking up the local gay party scene for a while now.
When and how did Brutkó Diszkó begin?
Kisdubos: Brutkó started in 2006. At that time, there were three of us: Kisdubos, Százalék and Shevil, the ex-Ösztrosokk veteran. Electroclash and indietronica were already well-known notions in the Budapest party scene, and the first nu-rave tunes had started appearing. However, the local gay scene seemed to be totally unaware of this evolution. Gay clubs offered nothing but the usual top 40-house-trance-RnB music. So Brutkó was a reaction to this.
What is Brutkó’s main ethos?
Kisdubos: It started as an amateur DIY project, and it still is. It’s mostly about fun, not insisting upon the superiority of any musical style. If I can’t drop some trashy, cheesy song in the midst of a “serious” set, I get depressed! We also propagate a laid back attitude: no strict dress codes, and no segregation of men and women, as happens so often in the Budapest queer scene.
What kind of music can we expect from a Brutkó Diszkó night?
Kisdubos: Indietonica, nu-rave, tech house, and whatever else pops into our minds!
And how would you describe the general atmosphere?
Kisdubos: Hmm, I’m not really sure how to put it into words, but I think it’s really easy to make friends there. That says it all, doesn’t it?
When will the next Brutkó Diszkó party be, and where?
Kisdubos: In the summer, in Budapest! Have I mentioned we’re not that keen on planning things?

Százalék: Recently, we’ve discovered the secret formula of a bad taste party that actually works. The so-called retro parties in Budapest are just simply not bad enough, but we really know how to torture people. Also, Madonna will finally get her local party as well, under the title Papa Don’t Vogue (debuts May 14th at ChaChaCha DPU). All the when-and-where details will be available at brutko.com.
