An Interview with Dvora Bochman

Accomplished artist Dvora Bochman (whose name means ‘bee’ by the way!), took the time to have a little chat with FUNZINE to share her thoughts about work and life. Currently she divides her time between Israel and Hungary. Her works have been exhibited all over Budapest and she currently volunteers for the Docent program at the Museum of Fine Arts.

What sort of things do you like to paint? And what sort of techniques and equipment do you use?

There are a variety of different subjects that I like to paint: Starting with flora and fauna, ranging to assorted images from different aspects which tell a visual story. Also I do abstracts which can vary from the serene to the extremely colorful! Certainly in the last few years, I have done sculptures which relate to my paintings. These works will be exhibited at the end of this month.  For my paintings I use assorted techniques mainly using brushes and spatulas.

How did you come to be in Budapest?

I have roots in big Hungary, now Transylvania, but we came to Budapest almost by a chance and fell in love with the place.

Can you tell us a bit about your last exhibition at MadeByYou, the creative store in downtown Budapest?

It was exiting to find this place in my neighborhood. It combines knowledge and creativity in a workshop. It offers painting on pottery and more. It is run by charming, young, talented and open-minded women. During the gloomy cold weather, it is amazing to find this warmth and sympathy!

We decided that the concept of the exhibition would emphasize the creativity of the compositions and colors. So, when people came to see the collection, some were inspired by it and painted things while they were there.

What is your favorite part of this exhibition and why?

All my works are my children. You love every child in a different way. The paintings that are exhibited now are from my personal collection. Some are more than 20 years old.

You seem to offer many artistic services – which is your favorite and why?

My wish is to go on painting, and creating as many sculptures as possible. But the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts and the Docent organization are extremely close to my heart. I cannot explain why.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?

In the past – my smallest art works – stamps which served as educational painted media that reached many people. Now I am proud to donate works for helping the homeless, peace, and so on.

What inspires you?

As a trained Artist I was educated to ‘always create’. So, I do not wait until something motivates me.

What are your hopes for the future?

I hope that the world will be a better place for all.

What advice would you give to young people who would like to become artists?

Go on learning and always find the child in you.

Has anything funny ever happened to you while at an exhibition or while painting?

There is always something funny but one thing I cannot forget is that, at my first exhibition, my mother was congratulated as the artist!

Did you always want to be an artist? Were there any other jobs which interested you?

I always loved to create, so after graduating from high school I went to study art. Later on, I learned how to teach, to use computers, information science, marketing…and also flat designing. In fact I have a drawer of assorted certificates and degrees. But it was always art that kept me going.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

When I will have spare time I will call and tell you!
