We wouldn’t want you to go hungry this Easter now would we? As a special treat, here is a recipe for a Hungarian Easter favorite – no respectable Hungarian table should be seen without it! So get stuck in and enjoy we say.
Ingredients
500 g flour
70 g butter
300 ml milk
20 g yeast
2 eggs
50 g dried or candied fruit (preferably raisins)
2 tbsp. granulated sugar
salt
Instructions
Mix yeast with a pinch of sugar and lukewarm milk and let it set for five minutes. Beat up the eggs and add them to the mixture alongside flour, the rest of the sugar, melted butter and a pinch of salt. Knead the dough, then add the dried or candied fruit and knead again until smooth. Sprinkle with flour, cover with a tea towel and wait until the dough rises. Then turn the dough onto a floured baking board, divide the dough into three and roll the pieces out thinly. When done, pleat (braid) them into one. Place the dough onto a greased baking tray and brush it with egg yolk. Let it rise, then brush it with egg yolk again, sprinkle with sugar (and almonds if you like). Place it in a preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes on medium heat.
