Get More of Maurus Wines

Discover the wines of Ákos Kamocsay Jr. at the Mór Wine Days on October 3rd – 5th, either at the festival’s Maurus Winery stand or during a tour of the Maurus cellars for a look “behind the curtain” at the winery’s philosophy and techniques. Needless to say, there will be countless opportunities to taste the wonders of the region at this singular winery.

Ákos Kamocsay Jr. is a young winemaker born in Mór, who grew up alongside vineyards of ripening grapes, meaning wine production was in his blood. His experience from the new world wineries, and his devotion to the Mór wine region gives him the ability to create handcrafted wines that are restoring the region to the status it deserves. His first wines are ready and bottled, awaiting the competition.

The Mór wine region, just 90 kilometers west of Budapest, is characterized by excellent topsoil and a microclimate ideal for growing high quality grapes. Also known as the home of the Ezerjó, the region has a centuries-long tradition of producing wines characterized by high alcohol content, slow aging and a fiery taste. Although the wines are strongly acidic in character, the flavor compensates for this.

The Lamberg Cellar, one of the oldest of the region, was finished in 1700. Local farmers once brought their wines here for storage, while in the war years, the cellar served as a shelter to those left homeless, and later, the wines of the Mór State Economy were aged here. The cellar has a graceful, lofty atmosphere perfect for falling in love… with Maurus wines.

For wine enthusiasts, 15 to 20 people can sit comfortably in the cellar for a tasting accompanied by cheese and scones, and it can accommodate groups of up to 60 standing visitors. The special Ezerjó törkölypálinka can also be requested for those interested in something a bit stronger.

A new tasting room is soon to open in the upper area of the cellar, where visitors will be able to learn about the region and familiarize themselves with its many wines in a comfortable setting.
