A Hidden Gem near the Castle – Walzer Café

A full day of sightseeing can leave even the most seasoned traveler worn out and weary. Budapest’s sights, while relatively accessible, still require a lot of walking, and sooner or later you’ll be looking for a place to sit down and drink a tea or coffee, hopefully without the experience being too „foreign”.

Nestled in a quiet and cozy vestibule towards the north end of the castle district, Walzer Café is a perfect place to rest and recharge before venturing on to the next impressive sight. Just a few steps from St. Mátyás Cathedral down the enchanting cobblestone Táncsics Mihály utca, the tiny coffee shop has just four seats inside, but offers a heated terrace with several tables and blankets for those cold days.

Once you’re comfortably seated, the friendly, smiling, English-speaking owner can take your order from a large array of coffee drinks, teas and hot chocolate. Available in many individual roasts and sources, as well as a weekly special blend, the coffee is only the finest Arabica type, imported from Germany via the renowned Semiramis brand, which was voted the best in Hungary in 2004. If you fall in love with it, she can bag up a package of beans for you, or grind them on the spot to the specification of your home coffee filter or brewer.

While stopping for a break at this hidden nook among the busy sights is recommended, if you’re in a hurry you can get the coffee to go – a very convenient deviation from the Hungarian norm. So if you find yourself in the castle district – which is really inevitable on any itinerary to Budapest – and in need of a good hot coffee as well as a respite from the crowds, give the Walzer Café a try.
