However tongue-twisting the Magyar language might be, there’s one word, a name actually, that regardless of where you’re from, you’ll probably be familiar with, and that’s the name of Ferenc Puskás.
For most of us, he was one of the best footballers of all time, the captain of Hungary’s unbeatable Golden Team, the virtuoso of Real Madrid. For Hungarians, he’s an ever-shining star, the pride of the nation who brought fame to this little country.

During his amazing career, he was an Olympic champion, a European champion, a World Cup and Champion’s League winner (3 times, actually) and a goal scoring king. In 1948, he was named the best goal-shooter of Europe, later the best of the 20th century, as he’s the only player to have scored in finals of the World Cup, the World Championship, the European Championship, the Champions’ League and the Olympics. Amazing, huh?
Still, he was so much more. Some knew him as a nice, bighearted guy, a friend you could always trust. Some knew him as a man who was able to connect people from different cultural backgrounds. The Real Puskás is a fine tribute to his life and achievements, taking us closer to the real Puskás as a person, not an icon. We should know more about him than just mere facts and trivia, as we’re pretty sure it’s worth knowing.
Hungarians tend to boast about famous Hungarians, but if there’s a name ringing bells all around the world, one that Hungarians should really be proud of, it’s Ferenc Puskás’s. This documentary is a beautiful homage paid to him.
