The Balázs Béla Studio (BBS) was a film studio that grew out of the association of young film professionals in 1959, granted official status by the cultural policy makers of the Kádár regime in 1961 in an attempt to both support and keep under observation fresh graduates of the College of Film.
As a studio, the work it produced was progressive, both aesthetically and politically, opposing the country’s official film industry – where staunch censorship was firmly in place. Characterized by intellectual openness, it was how, amongst others, Miklós Erdély found the opportunity to make his legendary films. This celebration of BBS’s past 50 years takes the form of a vast exhibition accompanied by film screenings and other events. Every Thursday, late night related events will be keeping Műcsarnok open until 10 p.m.
