Meet Dave
If you’ve liked the recent Eddie Murphy movies, then you’ll like this too. We follow the story of a group of aliens arriving to earth in a big Eddie Murphy shaped robot – Dave. They are frantically trying to control his every movement as he embarks on a quest around New York, but he gets himself run over. Luckily he’s okay, and befriends the driver of the car and her son. Then, what we get is a fun family affair as Dave struggles adjust to earth habits (think My Parents Are Aliens or Mork and Mindy). This film has taken a panning from reviewers, but it doesn’t pretend to be anything more than it is – a summer comedy for Eddie Murphy lovers.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Ten years ago comic books were for geeks, now geeks run Hollywood. It’s brilliant. The second Hellboy film is better than the first and now that it’s proved itself director Guillermo del Toro can set about having fun like a comic-book-geek let loose in a special effects studio. Interestingly for us Budapesters, this was the first movie to be filmed in the new Korda Studios here in the city. In this film the mythical world starts a rebellion and attempts to rule the Earth. Rejected by both worlds, the tough-talking hellspawn who you wouldn’t want your daughter to date, is the humanity’s only chance of survival. Cue big bad fight.

Get Smart
For those of us too young to remember the 1960’s spy parody television series Get Smart, a new version has been made for the big screen with a whole new cast. The film stars Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99, as they battle the forces of KAOS. The evil KAOS has comprised the security of America after attacking their spy command center – Control. Unfortunately (for America), but funnily (for the audience), Maxwell Smart is about as reliable as Steve Carell is a 40-year-old virgin and thus a comical calamity-filled plot ensues in which Smart is tested to the very limits of his abilities (not very far) in his quest to protect the land of the free

he Dark Knight
The buzz around this film was massive. Many things are built up but don’t quite live up to expectations (New Years Eve 2000, solar eclipses, marriage) – not true of The Dark Knight. Since its release, nearly every critic (apart from the ones who have to be cool and go against the grain) have been waxing lyrical about this dark-defyingly-darker Batman sequel and urging their readers to see it. We’re doing the same. See the caped crusader fighting the criminals of Gotham and the dilemmas of his moral code. See him meet The Joker and watch the struggle unfold, as both seem willing to break all the rules by which they live to beat the other once and for all.
