U2 3D Brings You Even Closer

Always seeking new ways to communicate their messages, U2, the world’s most popular band, has never been shy about trying out the latest technology – so long as it really is something truly new. U2 3D is exactly that.

As the first ever live-action digital 3D film, U2 3D brings viewers right into their high energy performance, immersing you in a theatrical experience unlike any other. Combining the absolute latest in 3D technology and multi-channel surround sound, it is impossible not to notice the amazing quality of the experience, both audio and visual. Some would even say it’s “even better than the real thing.”

The film was created on the final leg of U2’s Vertigo tour in Latin America. They chose to undertake the project during this segment of their tour because of the great energy of the audience, which definitely shows in the final product. This energy created between the massive crowds and the four band members is palpable, with the theater audience in the midst of it all. And yet, while you are right there, you have a perfect view of the show, comfortably from your seat.

The inspiration to shoot the biggest band in the world in concert using a revolutionary cinematic medium came after producer Steve Schklair created a radically different way to approach 3D film. The 3ality digital process is able to capture such a dynamic event thanks to in-camera motion control, real-time image processing and significantly improved digital cameras. The technical scale of the process was at an unsurpassed level, with as many as 18 digital cameras and miles of fiber optic cables at each show.

What these efforts have resulted in is a closer connection on an even broader scale. Directors Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington sought to capture the band’s relationship with each other during their performances, as well as the resonant response of fans.

The film includes numerous favorites including Beautiful Day, Pride (In the Name of Love), and With or Without You, among others. While any collection of U2 favorites has the power to move millions, the U2 3D experience will move that many more on a whole new level.
