A fast-growing little sibling of Könyvtár Klub, TreffOrt Kert is one of the latest additions to Budapest’s thriving summer nightlife and cultural scene. Tucked away on Astoria, this outdoor bar is located slap bang in the middle of the ever-bustling courtyard of ELTE University (the entrance is right next to Burger King) and has all sorts of events lined up for the whole summer.
Ten solid reasons to get off the beaten track and make your way to this little student magnet:
1. If you’ve ever fancied letting your hair down among century-old protected buildings, here’s your chance.
2. It’s not been labeled an “open-air cultural garden” for nothing. TreffOrt Kert dishes out all sorts of concerts of up-and-coming bands (e.g. Tuesdays are jam-packed with world music) as well as theater performances and literature evenings, all followed by DJs!
3. It’s a student hangout, which has more spin-offs than you think. First, students have been known to like their tipple but are usually forintless. This means that you can select from an impressive array of reasonably priced cocktails, beers and spirits as well as coffees, frappés and lemonades.
4. Talk about being cheap and cheerful – did we mention the loooong happy hours? Between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. (every day!) you can sip such all-time favorites as whiskey and coke for the ridiculous price of 500 HUF!
5. Also, students tend to speak languages, which makes mingling with the local crowd much, much easier.
6. Got the munchies? The caring folk at TreffOrt Kert have thought of that too, offering gyros, hot dogs and steaks as well as salads for calorie-counters! For something Hungarian, try their spicy kolbász (Magyar sausage) with mustard or lángos topped with sour cream and cheese.
7. What it lacks in glamour, this place makes up for in atmosphere. It’s a friendly, unpretentious little haven where you can laze on bean-bags, soaking up the sun, while in the evenings, lanterns and candles light up the yard.
8. Left your party face at home? Never fear, TreffOrt Kert is not bad for an all-night heart-to-heart either.
9. If you’re feeling overly active despite the heat, you can practice your csocsó (table football) skills.
10. Come rain or shine, this place is a safe bet. There are umbrellas to shelter you from the rain but in case of ultra-heavy rain, you can move inside to Könyvtár Klub.
In a nutshell, this is a place that’s hard to find and even harder to leave.
