Japanese Noriyuki Sawa’s productions are peppered and peopled by masks and puppets.
Fairytales is entirely the work of the theatrical jack-of-all-trades, from the writing and directing right through to the crafting of the puppets and the composing and performing of the music. Japanese and Czech approaches to puppet theater are fused in his, at times bizarre, work. Classic fairytales are presented in a beautiful, nostalgic yet strangely twisted fashion, alongside original, modern stories. Humor resonates throughout, and light, shadows and music, along with Noriyuki’s own body, play alongside the production’s many characters. It’s a short performance, suitable for all ages.
