A black beaded purse that may one have hidden the love letters of a beautiful young woman, a gorgeous Viennese toilette table, a range of dresses bringing back the ambience of the jolly years of the late 19th century, furniture that floods back memories and the atmosphere of merry, peaceful times…
All this and much more can be found in the House of Hungarian Art Nouveau, which has put on a nouveau-tastic, up-close-and-personal exhibition, courtesy of Tivadar Vad and his wife, who fell utterly in love with the movement and decided to create a home for it. No wonder. Art nouveau became popular around the turn of the 19th and 20th century. It was characterized by shocking architectural concepts and décor patterns, asymmetry and a turn towards nature. All these can be admired on the façade of the House of Hungarian Art Nouveau – asymmetric with closed balconies, adorned by colorful flowers made by the Zsolnay porcelain factory.
Upon entering, fabulous paintings, statues, jewelry and even the smallest pieces of art nouveau items take you back to bourgeois Budapest. Don’t miss the lovely fresh pastries, coffee and tea specialties in their café either (also complete with art nouveau bits and bobs), while you’re getting to know this vintage face of our beloved B-town!
