Belgian star choreographer (as well as actor and photographer), Wim Vandekeybus, has been fascinating his audiences for many years with his rapid, feisty style of dance. His vivacious pieces seem to remain inimitable, and Vandekeybus stands for action and virtuosity, combined, always, with powerful content.
The restless artist’s latest work, Nieuw Zwart / New Black opens with explosive dance promising breath-taking suspense, this time with a group of seven young dancers. An experimentation with various forms of physicality follow – four men and three women dealing with thematic guidelines like resistance and change, destruction and evolution. They’re joined by Kylie Walters, known from Menske, and three musicians. Dangerous passions, the transformation of the body through its surroundings and the ambivalent handling of existence in present times produce an existential tension on stage.
