‛Brand New Day’ was the title of the Harlem Gospel Singers’ European Tour – a little cheesy, perhaps, but probably apt given the energy, positivity and freshness of this talented group. They were led by gospel superstar Queen Esther Marrow, who has performed with the likes of Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and Harry Belafonte, to name but a few.
The group swept onto the stage wearing their trademark yellow and orange silk robes, as their hyperactive choir director (clad in a less flowing white number) skipped alongside them. Accompanied by awesome talents on the piano, organ, drums, bass and saxophone, the group belted out their Christian songs as if their lives depended on it. Their control, energy, precision and evident faith were something to marvel at, and the simple choreography allowed the mind-blowing vocals to evolve into a visual spectacular.
Queen Esther’s presence upped the game a notch and her explosive voice carried effortlessly around the sports arena, amazing the audience. She may be 65, but she sure does get in the groove. Several of the singers stepped forward to perform solos and it was clear that any one of the group could be solo artists; their personality, power and talent was clear for all to see.
In the second half the robes were changed for more contemporary costumes….and the music was more gospel pop (gop?) contrasting with the hymns showcased in the previous act. Nevertheless this went down a treat as everyone was able to recognize famous hits such as “He’s Got the Whole World (in his hands)” and “Oh Happy Day.”
I can honestly say that I’ve never seen so many happy Hungarians in one place. I guess gospel music gets everyone grooving!
