In a new exhibition sponsored by the Mexican Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Octogonart Gallery will present the works of sculptor Pal Kepenyes, a Hungarian-born artist who now lives and works in Mexico.
Not your average artistic rebel, Kepenyes has an eclectic story: after studying for several years at the College of Applied Arts and the Art College, he was arrested in the 50s for fictitious charges and only freed during the revolution of 1956. He finished his studies in Paris, then settled down in Acapulco with his Mexican wife.
Kepenyes’s works – from jewelry that can be viewed as individual statues to statuettes and monumental memorials – are sought after worldwide. Working with gems and precious metals such as brass and copper alloy, silver and gold, he unites eras and bridges continents with explosive force and unique characterization. One can see in the items everything from local Hungarian folk art through ancient Indian culture to avant-garde surrealism.
