Beheld – An Installation by Graeme Miller

The body of an emigrant from Cameroon lands in a German forest. Distant geographical places are wedded in a sudden falling moment. The European Union represents the land of dreams for millions, and many of those are ready to take risky journeys.

As the inhabitants of Fortress Europe, do we even think about the personal tragedies behind the casualty statistics of emigration? Graeme Miller certainly did while he has visited places around the world where migrants have fallen from aircraft – stowaways who have hidden in the wheel bays of commercial airlines. As the places approach airports and lower their wheels, so their bodies fall to the ground, charging a particular piece of ground with significance.
