Having just moved to a recently-opened new building, the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin is starting 2008 with several new types of programs, the first of which – Cinema Total – is organized on the occasion of the International Berlinale Film Festival.
As there are unfortunately no Hungarian films in competition at Berlinale this year, CHB has decided to offer a wide range of programs meant to make Hungarian film visible in Berlin and to offer the chance for the international public to meet professionals of Hungarian film. The main sponsors of Cinema Total are the Hungarian Motion Picture Foundation and the Hungarian Film Union.

February 13 – Cinema Total Berlin edition
5 pm – Cinema Total: Street screening of Géza M. Tóth’s Ergo
For the first time, on an 8×6 meter projection screen, CHB will display its show-window to Berlin. For the occasion of this street-screening presentation, they’ll project the newest animation by Academy Award nominee Géza M. Tóth.
6:30pm – Exhibition opening: Film as Fine Art
With Ulrich Gregor and István Szabó, and special guest Udo Kier.
Gábor Bódy was probably the first to express (in the seventies) that the main challenge to the film maker is to liberate the cinematic medium from the terrain of industrial happening. But what lies beyond cinema? The astonishing richness of “total cinema”. Hungarian film supplies many instances for such cinematographic border cases. The exhibition of Collegium Hungaricum Berlin’s Moholy-Nagy Gallery presents an installation from sequences of films by Bódy, Huszárik, János Tóth, Jeles, Kardos, Szaladják, Szemző and Pálfi.
Following the opening there will be a reception of CHB and Magyar Filmunió (Hungarian Film Union) by the occasion of the Berlinale.
Curated by Dr. Klára Muhi and Dr. Veronika Baksa-Soós, the exhibition will run from February 14-28th and is open Monday-Friday 10am-8pm, and Saturday and Sunday 2pm-8pm.

8 pm – Berliner Premiere of Milky Way
This ambient film by Benedek Fliegauf won the Gold Leopard Award in 2007, in Locarno. Further screenings will take place on February 16th, 20th and 26th at 6 pm.
10 pm – Cinema Total Party
Concert for two HANG-instruments and for piano by Tivadar Nemesi and László Moldvai.
