More than twenty-five years since graffiti appeared in galleries in New York City and Rome, legitimizing within the mainstream establishment a form previously seen as rebellious, “street art” has continued to ask tough questions and delight viewers with it’s savvy mix of realism and fantasy.
On the 5th district’s Falk Miksa Street one can find a gallery that specializes in this most contemporary movement, letting a little light fall on the dusty street fading idly away in the heat-waves striking the city.
Visitors to Stereo Gallery are greeted by a splash of colors jumping off stretched canvas and a smile from one of the curators, who are more than happy to explain the origins and ideas at stake in the works. Eclectic background music heightens the energy, but this is also an oasis for street artists and their fans to come and rest. Never to be seen as passé, the new trend from Amsterdam is to print motifs from the works onto clothing – not on t-shirts as one might expect, but on the finest quality, extravagant suits. Though the form is recognized around the world, a stop into Stereo is an excellent chance to see what European artists can do as well.
