Far, far away from the Foggy Albion there is a unique burger joint that brings a piece of England to Budapest. Located in the heart of the capital city, Black Cab Burger offers an incomparable experience with an amazing flavour fusion that guarantees love at first bite.
It was a cold, snowy Tuesday afternoon when we visited Black Cab Burger’s Rákóczi utca joint, the paradise for all true hamburger lovers. A modern, cosy atmosphere welcomes us with comfortable red chairs, stylish black tables and London’s emblematic symbols on the walls displaying the double decker buses, the Tower Bridge, and black cabs too, of course. The owner and manager spent several years abroad, and he was inspired by memories of a London burger van that was very popular among hungry black cab drivers.

Quality and Sustainability
From design to ingredient sourcing everything is done by a small circle of friends who put their heart into the success of the restaurant. There is a special emphasis on quality and fresh ingredients, as well as on being environmentally friendly, which they attempt to pursue by recycling, using led lights, bio cleaning products, no PET bottles, and so on.
Heavenly Flavour Fusion
Once you take a look at Black Cab’s menu you’ll immediately know it’s a gourmet burger kitchen. Their creative “make your own burger” concept means guests can build their desired burger from top to bottom with regard to the size of the bun, the preferred meat – chicken, beef, salmon – toppings, and extras including specialties such as blue cheese, grilled pineapple and fried egg.
Experiences
They have house specials too, of which my companion and I tried customer favourite Cabbie Burger first. The fusion of fresh pickled cucumber, crunchy iceberg lettuce, tomato, onion, and the beautifully melted cheddar cheese is topped by medium grilled prime beef and mild jalapeno peppers that rock taste buds like a hurricane. The icing on the cake is the crispy bacon and the perfect amount of sauces (mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, BBQ), all served in a soft toasted bun.

Black Cab’s pride and joy, Big Smoky Burger was the second “contestant” that landed on our plate. After just one bite it’s totally obvious why it won Hellmann’s Burger Championship in 2016: without a doubt it’s a great, tasty burger with prime beef, bacon, fried onion and fresh vegetables except for cucumber. We noticed that each flavours individually popped up while we were munching on our burger, to then join forces and create the perfect taste harmony in the mouth.

We sinked our teeth into Black Cab’s hand-cut chips fried in peanut oil, and chose a characterful malt vinegar dressing to it. The beloved condiment of the British fried food world created an exciting taste harmony with the golden-brown fries and it simply blew us away. Then, with an already full stomach we dipped our fork into the must-taste Blue Cheese Salad made of iceberg lettuce, tomato, apple, Blue D’Auvergne blue cheese and grilled bacon on top, sprinkled with the incredibly delicious honey and mustard dressing. The mouth-watering memories of this flavour fusion are truly unforgettable and shout for another round.

Taste the Feeling
As we were already full, we had to postpone trying their great hot-dogs (frankfurter or grilled sausage) and the full chocolate, home-made brownie. Instead, we finished our culinary journey at the drink section. From the decent list of English soft drinks, ales, ciders and Hungarian fruit juices I tried Crabbie’s refreshing bottled ginger beer while my companion went for Fuller’s London Pride, an authentic, characterful draught beer, with burger taming bitterness. We’ll return!
