The main theme of Electrify’s 16th night is dream-like atmospheres, as the modern-day soul-crushing ballads of Grouper meet the Belgian ssaliva’s romantic hyperambient chamber music and Carla Under Water’s powerful improvisations.
Portland-based Liz Harris’s project, Grouper evokes unattainable celestial worlds, the all-consuming love that everyone desires to feel and nature’s almighty powers all at the same time. Her songs, glorious fruits of a marriage between dream-pop and ambient, paint impressionistic landscapes filled with hope, humility and soul-crushing beauty by Grouper’s mysterious, fragile vocals, guitar, piano and an vast amount of effects.
Her debut album was released in 2005 and, up until now, eight albums have since followed, exploring uncharted pocket after uncharted pocket within her universe. During her career she has worked with Xiu Xiu and The Bug, and toured extensively with Animal Collective; it also says a lot about her music’s universal nature that artists as diverse as Nils Frahm, Tropic of Cancer, Gaslamp Killer, Trentemøller, The Haxan Cloak and Friendly Fires have all covered her songs. Electrify will mark Grouper’s first appearance in Hungary, and as her music is always the most entrancing in a concert context, it promises to be an unforgettable experience.
