April is finally here, and Budapest has absolutely no intention of letting it go to waste. From refurbished hilltop fortresses and cherry blossoms to river cruises, historic walking tours and vineyard gatherings, this month’s bucket list has something for everyone.
Spring walk in City Park
A spring walk in Budapest’s City Park is always a great idea. Start near Heroes’ Square, then wander along the paths toward Vajdahunyad Castle, which looks like it came straight out of a fairytale. Cross the little bridges by the lake where people are boating or relaxing nearby. On sunny days the park feels lively, with locals strolling, cycling, or having picnics. You can grab a coffee on the way, pass by the Zoo, and maybe end your walk at the warm Széchenyi Baths.

Sakura Festival
Across two weekends (March 28-29 and April 11-12), ELTE Botanical Garden trades its tranquility for something altogether more magical. Blankets on the grass, pink cherry blossom clouds overhead, the quiet joy of doing nothing in particular: this is Ohanami, the beloved Japanese tradition of celebrating the fleeting beauty of sakura season. In between the blossoms, there’s plenty to keep you busy, from ikebana exhibitions to martial arts demonstrations, haiku competitions, and live concerts.

Pesach in the Jewish Quarter
Pesach (commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery) is celebrated this year from April 1-9, and there’s no better time to explore the stories, history and hidden corners of Budapest’s timeworn Jewish Quarter. Top Budapest Tours’ Free Jewish Quarter & WW2 Tour covers it all: the Synagogue Triangle, the Martyr Cemetery, the haunting past of the Budapest Ghetto, and the figures, courtyards and ruin bars that give this neighborhood its unmistakable character.

Cherry Blossom at Tóth Árpád Promenade
Every spring, the Japanese ornamental cherry trees lining Tóth Árpád Promenade on the southwestern edge of Buda Castle transform one of the city’s most beautiful walkways into a tunnel of soft pink blossoms – and it never lasts long enough. Planted between 2006 and 2009, the trees have become one of Budapest’s most beloved seasonal spectacles, drawing photographers, romantics and anyone who needs a reminder that spring is worth celebrating. Check the weather and get up there before the petals are gone!

Day Trip by Boat
Ready to escape the city for a day? Mahart’s scenic cruise departs from Vigadó Square and arrives in Szentendre. It runs only on weekends until Easter, then daily for one week during the spring break, and afterwards again on a seasonal basis. Explore the Belgrade Cathedral, the Margit Kovács Museum, and the sprawling Open Air Ethnographic Museum, or simply wander the romantic cobblestone streets and soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere at your own pace.

Spring Etyek Picnic
Just half an hour from Budapest, Etyek’s sun-drenched vineyard landscape comes alive for one of Hungary’s most beloved spring gatherings on April 18-19. Fresh local wines, seasonal gastronomy, street food favorites, live music across multiple stages and a genuine picnic atmosphere make this the perfect weekend outing, with DJs, pop acts, pianists and more keeping the energy up throughout the day and into the night.
