It’s summertime, and Budapest offers plenty opportunities for you to enjoy the warm nights and the brightly shining stars even if you’re a self-professed cinema buff! Discover the world of open air movie screenings and pay tribute to the film gods this summer at several venues in Budapest.
Kobuci Kertmozi
In the courtyard of Óbuda’s Baroque Zichy Castle, Kobuci Kertmozi invites you to a free film screening every Monday evening from 8.30 PM. The repertoire consists of Hungarian movies, ranging from old classics (A Study on Women, 1967) to brand new festival favorites (Kills on Wheels, 2016), each showing featuring a star guest, and plenty of reasons for amazement in the historic setting.
Partmozi
Not far from Kobuci, on the shore of the Danube river, you’ll find Fellini Kultúrbisztró’s Partmozi event series: held on every Wednesday from 9 PM till the end of August, Partmozi awaits you with comfy deck chairs, French, English and Spanish art movies, and a bar full of refreshing drinks and delicious bites. Entry is free, though seatings are limited, so you better arrive in time if you don’t want to watch the films halfway submerged into the pebble beach.
VárKERTmozi
Another special Danubian venue is the Várkert Bazár’s sloping open air theater, screening Hungarian films from the past few years on each Wednesday from 14 June till 30 August. Movies start at 9.30 PM, and the tickets can be vouched for 300HUF’s from any purchase you make at the various Street Food buffets on the location.
Budapest Rooftop Cinema
Celebrating its fifth anniversary, Budapest Rooftop Cinema has begun its third year atop downtown’s Corvin Club on 12 June with the screening of Donnie Darko. During the summer, the BRC crew will try and cover the needs of every film fanatic, by showing cult classics on Mondays (in English language with Hungarian subtitles), Hungarian films on Tuesdays, contemporary and classic French movies on Thursdays, and film premiers on every Wednesday and Friday evening, starting at sunset. Tickets for the screenings go for 900 HUF.
