Summer holidays tend to be associated with the beach, sunshine and 40C°. It is believed by many that when rainy weather hits, the holiday is spoilt. Not at Lake Balaton though. Cool weather can come and go, no one will be bored at the Hungarian Riviera. There are plenty of events you can enjoy which might be even more fascinating than swimming in the lake and sunbathing on the beach. Here are three of the best ones!
1. AFRICA MUSEUM
Balatonederics’s Africa Museum and Zoo was established in 1984 by dr. Endre Nagy (1913-1994), the famous Africa researcher and hunter. Besides his trophies and ethnographical collection, you may encounter with zebras, camels, antelopes and ostriches as well as visit a Masai hovel.
2. PANNON OBSERVATORY
Bakonybél’s 800-squaremetre big observatory is the first complex, astronomical educational centre of Hungary. There is a permanent exhibition on the history of astronomy and space research but the most modern digital planetarium in the country can also be found here. In the telescope park visitors can have a look at the Sun with the special H-alpha telescope during the day, while at night time they observe the starry sky.
3. LAKE CAVE
Before taking a boat trip in the Lake Cave of Tapolca, you can visit the unique exhibition on the wonderful world of karst region. Children can crawl in the adventure cavern while adults can participate in the ‘feel the rocks’ game that challenges some of the five senses.
