Welcome to Paprika Revue House, where a Dinner&Show awaits like nowhere else! No, this isn\u2019t Las Vegas: the location is downtown Budapest, where a mystical show reveals Hungarian culture in a contemporary way. We were lucky enough to be among the first to try <\/span><\/b>it :<\/span><\/b> before our arrival, we had already checked out the 5-course menu, so we knew we were in for a fantastic gastronomic experience \u2013 but never in our wildest dreams did we expect the show to blow us away like this.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The best of folklore meets the city<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

We arrive on Thursday evening, ready to get into the weekend spirit with the 3-hour-long program, including a 55-minute folklore revue show by Britain\u2019s Got Talent\u2019s T\u00edmea Papp<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We haven\u2019t even stepped inside yet, but we\u2019re already smiling: a fiery red \u201cpaprika hallway\u201d<\/strong> welcomes us at the entrance. From the cloakroom, we\u2019d head straight to our table \u2013 we heard that there\u2019s already a basket of bread waiting for us, begging to be spread with Liptauer cheese spread and smoky eggplant cream \u2013 but we can\u2019t resist a quick peek into the shop first, where a sweet puli mug instantly makes it onto our wishlist. After the short detour, we finally make it to the auditorium, and it feels like we\u2019ve stepped into a folk tale<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Overhead, a giant stork; trees stretching skyward; on the walls, wooden boards and plates, one of which boldly declaring in curly lettering that \u201egoulash is a soup\u201d. Seeing the huge stage<\/strong>, we nod in approval \u2013 judging by its size, a truly grand show awaits.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Flavours full of rythm and tradition<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

But before that, there are still two more courses to go. Paprika Revue House doesn\u2019t make it easy for us, as we could choose from four menus \u2013 premium, <\/strong><\/span>fish,<\/strong> traditional and vegan<\/strong>. We went with the last two, so now duck liver p\u00e2t\u00e9 and a roasted celeriac tartare await us \u2013 we pat ourselves on the back, excellent choices so far!<\/span><\/p>\n

We alternate between pouring ourselves wine and fruity \u201csz\u00f6rp\u201d \u2013 a ritual we\u2019ll repeat more than once tonight, as Paprika offers unlimited drinks<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve barely taken our first spoonfuls of soup \u2013 Goulash soup in a caldron<\/strong> with Hungarian pinched noodles and porcini mushroom cream soup, oh my! \u2013 when the show begins.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story follows the adventures of a playful shepherd<\/strong>: while he wanders around Budapest in search of his <\/span>sheep<\/span>, the audience gets to explore Hungarian traditions thanks to dancers, musicians, <\/span>a tightrope walker<\/span>, and singers dressed in contemporary-folk-inspired costumes<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Breathtaking solos and colorful performances\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In the dazzling scenes, Hungarian plains come to life<\/strong>, sweet Zsolnay porcelain dolls take the stage to dance, and of course, grandma\u2019s recipe book also makes an appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

And when the first notes of the touching folk song<\/strong>, \u201cA csit\u00e1ri hegyek alatt\u201d begin to play\u2026 well, let\u2019s just say there wasn\u2019t a dry eye in the house. <\/span><\/p>\n

During the intermission we get to exchange a few words with the lead performer and the dancers \u2013 but our attention is quickly stolen by the arrival of the main courses. And really, who could concentrate on anything when there is rolled chicken paprikash<\/strong> with pearl barley casserole and grilled cauliflower steak with Hungarian ratatouille on the table? <\/span><\/p>\n

The second act wraps with a breathtaking violin solo by a virtuoso performer<\/strong> \u2013 but the evening isn\u2019t over just yet, we\u2019re still in for a Soml\u00f3i<\/strong> sponge cake trifle and a chocolate cake. <\/span><\/p>\n

Around 10:30 PM, as we step out into Budapest\u2019s increasingly lively party district, we find ourselves wishing we had more international friends \u2013 so we could show them Paprika Revue House\u2026 and the magic of our traditions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
