Shot in black and white, 1945 is not about the Nazis, nor the horrors of the Holocaust; rather, it\u2019s a story about secrets and guilt.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-funzine-large wp-image-353259\" src=\"https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1945_film3-e1485348775714-850x478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"478\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Offering a dark, intense, and shockingly personal viewing experience, Son of Saul is set in the Auschwitz concentration camp, and revolves around (literally!) the character of Saul Ausl\u00e4nder, a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando (a team of workers whose job was to aid with the disposal of gas chamber victims), who sets out to give a proper burial to a child who he mistakenly thinks to be his own son. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Nemes\u2019 directorial debut was the first Hungarian movie to win the award for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2016 Golden Globe, as well as the country\u2019s second Oscar-winner since Istv\u00e1n Szab\u00f3\u2019s Mephisto.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-funzine-large wp-image-353263\" src=\"https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Son_of_Saul_-_Laszlo_Nemes_-_Photo_2-850x646.jpg\" alt=\"Son of Saul\" width=\"850\" height=\"646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Son_of_Saul_-_Laszlo_Nemes_-_Photo_2-850x646.jpg 850w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Son_of_Saul_-_Laszlo_Nemes_-_Photo_2-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Son_of_Saul_-_Laszlo_Nemes_-_Photo_2-768x584.jpg 768w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Son_of_Saul_-_Laszlo_Nemes_-_Photo_2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Directed by the above-mentioned Istv\u00e1n Szab\u00f3 from his own script and starring Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, and William Hurt, 1999\u2019s Sunshine follows five generations of a Hungarian Jewish family from the late 19th century to the fall of communism in 1989, depicting life during the monarchy, in German-occupied Hungary, and the events leading up to the 1956 Revolution.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-funzine-large wp-image-353265\" src=\"https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sunshine-850x547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sunshine-850x547.jpg 850w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sunshine-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sunshine-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sunshine-100x65.jpg 100w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Sunshine.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Released in 2002 and often termed as the \u201cHungarian Schindler\u2019s list\u201d, Perlasca is a little-known Italian-French-Swedish-Hungarian co-production which focuses on Italian cattle dealer Giorgio Perlasca, who at first was sympathetic to the fascist cause, but had a sudden change of heart when he saw how the occupying German forces treated the Hungarian Jews. Consequently, Perlasca decides to pose as the Spanish consul to Hungary, and hatches a plan to help save thousands of Jews from being sent to Nazi concentration camps.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-353267\" src=\"https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Perlasca-2.jpg\" alt=\"Perlasca\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Perlasca-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Perlasca-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/funzine.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Perlasca-2-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Nobel Prize-winner author Imre Kert\u00e9sz, Fateless is about a 14-year old Jewish Hungarian boy\u2019s experiences in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Scored by Ennio Morricone and shot by award-winning Hungarian cinematographer Lajos Koltai, the movie leads us through the monstrosities of WWII from the day of the first Nazi pogroms in Hungary to the main character\u2019s return to a Budapest ravaged by different kind of horrors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-funzine-large wp-image-353261\"
