The last premiere of 2017 at the Hungarian State Opera is a fairy-tale opera performed traditionally in the festive season. The new production directed by\u00a0<\/strong>Rafael R. Villalobos<\/strong><\/a>, winner of Opera Europa\u2019s directing competition in Graz, welcomes adults and children alike.*<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>The Wagnerian\u00a0Engelbert Humperdinck<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the most important figures in German fairy-tale opera. The success of a shortish \u201cM\u00e4rchenoper\u201d composed to a libretto by the composer\u2019s own sister, Adelheid Wette, convinced him to write\u00a0a full-evening children\u2019s opera based on the famous Brothers Grimm story<\/strong>, with slight departures from the original plot.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The piece was immediately declared a masterpiece by Humperdinck\u2019s contemporary Richard Strauss, who conducted the fairy-tale opera at its Weimar premiere. Greeted with instant and enormous acclaim, the work went on to conquer the world.<\/p>\n

\u201eHumperdinck\u2019s opera deals with various themes, all of a markedly social nature. Standing out amongst them, due to the numerous references to it throughout the piece, is Work. Adults and children alike in this story, at once fable and drama, live under its yoke, forced to work until they drop, their effort largely unrewarded. The resulting frustration traps the characters in a gloomy and depressing spiral\u201d\u00a0<\/em>said the director.\u00a0\u201eThe difficult, but not impossible, task I set myself is therefore that of creating two parallel worlds in which adults and children can enjoy themselves while at the same time reflecting on the real world they live in.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Conducted by acclaimed\u00a0J\u00e1nos Kov\u00e1cs\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>the production features leading singers of the Hungarian State Opera like\u00a0Judit N\u00e9meth<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Bernadett Wiedemann<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in the role of the witch,\u00a0<\/strong>Atala Sch\u00f6ck\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>and\u00a0L\u00facia Megyesi Schwartz<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as Gertrud, the mother,\u00a0Csaba Szegedi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Zsolt Haja<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>as Peter, the father. They are joined by young talents\u00a0Gabriella Balga<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Zs\u00f3fia K\u00e1lnay<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as H\u00e4nsel and\u00a0N\u00f3ra Ducza<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Helga N\u00e1n\u00e1si<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as Gretel.<\/p>\n
