The birthday of widely acknowledged poet Attila J\u00f3zsef, 11 April is the celebration of the much beloved rhyming lines across the whole country. Hungarian literature abounds with beautiful poems, though it might stay hidden in front of the foreign eyes. To uncover a tiny slice of the many wonderful works, we proudly present some of the most brilliant thoughts of famous, local poets. <\/strong><\/p>\n

“Every single smile, movement, word of yours
\nI keep like the earth keeps all fallen matter.
\nLike acids into metal
\nso my instincts have burnt
\nyour dear and beautiful form into my mind,
\nand there your being\u00a0fills\u00a0up\u00a0everything.<\/p>\n

Moments pass by, rattling
\nbut you are sitting mutely in my ears.
\nStars blaze and fall
\nbut you stand still in my eyes.

\u201eI cannot know what this land means to other people.<\/p>\n

For me, it is my birthplace, this little nation embraced<\/p>\n

by flames, the world of my childhood rocking in the distance.<\/p>\n

I grew out of her like a tender branch from a tree<\/p>\n

and I hope one day my body will sink into her.<\/p>\n

I am at home. And if a shrub happens to kneel down<\/p>\n

beside my foot, I know both its name and its flower;<\/p>\n

I know who walks on the road and where they are going,<\/p>\n

and what it might mean when in the summer sunset<\/p>\n

the house-walls shimmer and drip with crimson-agony…\u201d<\/p>\n

eyes the words I had written gazed at me,<\/p>\n

and the toxin of forty cigarettes were working in me,<\/p>\n

as well as other things. The darkness. Everything\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
