International Mother Language Day is held on 21 February to remark the significance of languages as well as cultural diversity and multilingualism.<\/p>\n<p>To highlight the\u00a0annual observance, we&#8217;d like to share one of the most brilliant Hungarian poems by Mikl\u00f3s Radn\u00f3ti &#8211; along with its English translation!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"850\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-au00cItu3o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 1901px;\" width=\"802\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"302\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know what this\u00a0region\u00a0means to others<\/p>\n<p>It is my birthplace there now linked with\u00a0flames<\/p>\n<p>a little land, my long lost childhood\u2019s world<\/p>\n<p>I grew up from this\u00a0tree trunk\u00a0a\u00a0frail twig<\/p>\n<p>My\u00a0corpse\u00a0I hope will rest beneath this\u00a0soil<\/p>\n<p>Here I\u2019m at home a bowed\u00a0shrub\u00a0at my feet<\/p>\n<p>I recognize the flower and know its name<\/p>\n<p>I know the road and those who come and go<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I know too what the summer sunset\u00a0means<\/p>\n<p>with reddening pain poured out from\u00a0sweatingwalls<\/p>\n<p>This region for the airman is just a map<\/p>\n<p>He does not know here V\u00f6r\u00f6smarty lived<\/p>\n<p>For him it\u2019s factories,barracks<\/p>\n<p>But for me it\u2019s\u00a0crickets,\u00a0oxen, church tower, gentle farmsteads<\/p>\n<p>He through his sights sees\u00a0chimneys, ploughed upfields<\/p>\n<p>I see the workmen trembling for their\u00a0toil<\/p>\n<p>Woods, birds in\u00a0orchards, vineyards and\u00a0graves<\/p>\n<p>by one of which a grand dame noiseless\u00a0weeps<\/p>\n<p>from what up there the\u00a0target\u00a0rail or\u00a0works<\/p>\n<p>down here is the\u00a0dwelling\u00a0of the signalman<\/p>\n<p>we see him standing here in front of it<\/p>\n<p>the red flag in his hand<\/p>\n<p>around him children<\/p>\n<p>a\u00a0sheepdog\u00a0in the works yard\u00a0frolicking<\/p>\n<p>nearby the park with\u00a0footprints\u00a0of past loves<\/p>\n<p>and kisses honey sweet or\u00a0bilberry\u00a0sour<\/p>\n<p>the years I went to school I often stepped<\/p>\n<p>for luck on one stone in the sidewalk\u2019s edge<\/p>\n<p>when fearing classroom tests<\/p>\n<p>here is the stone from far above it can\u2019t well be seen<\/p>\n<p>no instrument is able to\u00a0detect\u00a0it<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Like other nations we have greatly\u00a0sinned<\/p>\n<p>We know our sins, know when and how we sinned<\/p>\n<p>but\u00a0innocent\u00a0are poets,\u00a0labourers\u00a0and babies<\/p>\n<p>whose intelligence must shine<\/p>\n<p>hidden away protected in dark\u00a0cellars<\/p>\n<p>until peace once more with sign writes on our land<\/p>\n<p>then they with fresh and open speech will answer our\u00a0stifled\u00a0words<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0shield\u00a0us until then with your huge\u00a0wings\u00a0oh, watching cloud at night.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"302\">Nem tudhatom, hogy m\u00e1snak e t\u00e1j\u00e9k mit jelent,<\/p>\n<p>nekem sz\u00fcl\u0151haz\u00e1m itt e l\u00e1ngokt\u00f3l \u00f6lelt<\/p>\n<p>kis orsz\u00e1g, messzering\u00f3 gyerekkorom vil\u00e1ga.<\/p>\n<p>Bel\u0151le n\u0151ttem \u00e9n, mint fat\u00f6rzsb\u0151l gy\u00f6nge \u00e1ga<\/p>\n<p>s rem\u00e9lem, testem is majd e f\u00f6ldbe s\u00fcpped el.<\/p>\n<p>Itthon vagyok.
