Budapest’s current fascinating look was heavily influenced by the stunning Art Nouveau Movement.

Budapest’s current look was heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau style that became popular around the turn of the 20th century, and you can still see its impact on many buildings and their interiors as you walk through the city. Join us on a journey back in time! With these various programs, you can travel to the early 1900s and explore the city as it once was.

Get Cozy: Gellért Thermal Bath

The stunning Art Nouveau-style Gellért Thermal Bath, finished in 1918, has a much longer history than you might expect. There’s been a bathhouse here since the 12th century, and even earlier, a medieval chronicle from the 10th century mentioned an ancient bath at this very spot. The healing powers of the Gellért waters were well-known even back then—legend has it, they even helped cure leprosy patients in a nearby hospital! In 1905, a design competition was held for the new bath building, and instead of choosing just one winner, the top three architects joined forces to create the magnificent structure we see today. Fun fact: within just 3 hours of its grand opening, over 200 people had already jumped into the new pools! These days, Gellért Bath is still the perfect place to unwind, especially during the colder months. With its outdoor pool, indoor thermal baths, swimming pool, saunas, and steam rooms, it’s an ideal spot to soak away the stress of everyday life in an absolutely gorgeous setting.

Wander & Wonder: Városligeti fasor

As you walk along Andrássy Avenue and its surroundings, you’ll spot plenty of elegant villas that instantly take you back to the grandeur of imperial Budapest at the beginning of the 20th century. The houses in the district’s villa neighbourhood hold countless stories and secrets, making them perfect for exploring on a leisurely stroll. Before Andrássy Avenue was completed in 1876, the only way for people to get to City Park for some fresh air was by walking down Király Street and its continuation, Városligeti Avenue. By the late 19th century, Andrássy Avenue, with its new underground railway, had become the main thoroughfare, while the once modest summer cottages along the avenue were replaced by beautiful villas built by Budapest’s wealthy bourgeoisie. So, bundle up, grab a hot coffee or tea, and take a walk through these streets, which feel like a journey back in time.

Cultural Catch-Up: Róth Miksa Memorial House and Collection

Miksa Róth was one of Hungary’s most renowned applied artists at the turn of the 20th century, celebrated for his exquisite stained-glass windows and mosaics, which can be found in many iconic buildings. He lived and worked in a downtown apartment, just a courtyard away from his studio, where his masterpieces came to life. After Róth’s death, his children donated his legacy to the district, and in 1999, the Róth Miksa Memorial House and Collection opened in his former home. The ground floor features an exhibition of his stained-glass work, offering a glimpse into his extraordinary career, while upstairs, the “Mosaics and Glass” exhibit showcases a portion of his glass art collection. One of the highlights of the museum is the apartment museum, which provides a true time-travel experience. The early 20th-century middle-class apartment not only tells the story of the Róth family but also offers insight into their lifestyle and daily life. For more, join a guided tour in English at the museum on November 30th at 11 AM. Visit their website for additional details.

Dine in Style: Bobo Restaurant

The stunning building at 6-7 Marczibányi Square, constructed in German Neo-Renaissance style in 1885, once housed a restaurant, a casino, and a ballroom. It was a favourite spot for the Budapest aristocracy, and even Queen Elisabeth (Sisi) visited here once. In the early 20th century, the shooting range was expanded, but World War II put a stop to further improvements. During the socialist years, the building was taken over by the Hungarian National Defense League. It was then used for training conscripts and, due to Cold War tensions, for drills with young students during national defense days. The impressive villa was renovated in 2016 and is surrounded by a large, beautifully maintained park with ancient trees, giving extra sparkle to the stunning place. Today, you’ll find Bobo Restaurant here, offering a unique blend of classic Hungarian dishes and exciting international flavours in a truly remarkable setting.

Cave Church

For a captivating visit right at the heart of Budapest, make sure to explore the Gellért Hill Cave Church, a genuine national treasure. This historic sanctuary, completed in the spring of 1931 according to the visionary plans of Kálmán Lux and masterfully brought to life by Károly Weichinger, stands as a remarkable sight that’s not to be missed. Additionally, in 1934, a Neo-Romanesque-style monastery was added to the church, enhancing the entire experience.

Inner-City Parish Church

Budapest’s Inner-City Parish Church, also known as the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is located right in the busy hub of the city. Its adventurous history traces all the way back to the 14th century, and over the centuries, it even pulled double duty as a mosque. In the mid-1700s, it got a Baroque-style makeover that really spruced things up. You can actually join one of the guided tours in English to uncover all the secrets – the full scoop on the history and the mind-blowing architecture.

Photo: Fortepan / Schmidt Albin

Nestled along the banks of Europe’s majestic Danube River, Budapest has been a bustling centre of culture and civilization for centuries. Its story begins with the merging of three distinct cities, Buda, Pest, and Óbuda, which united in 1873 to turn into the vibrant capital we know today.

Going back to the beginnings, the origins of Budapest can be traced to Celts who occupied the plains of Hungary in the 4th century BC. Since then, the city has faced a fair share of challenges, as it was invaded by several other nations throughout its history, which all left their mark on our lively city. For example, Aquincum remembers the times when the country belonged to the Roman Empire, while the many thermal baths, such as the iconic Rudas and Széchenyi Baths are a reminder of the era when the city was under Ottoman rule.

As in many other places worldwide, the 20th century was not easy on the Hungarian capital, as the world wars and the strict Soviet regime posed a threat on its progress, the revolutions of 1989, however, brought the end of Communism, which opened several new doors and possibilities for Budapest.

Photo: Fortepan / Budapest Főváros Levéltára / Klösz György fényképei

One of the biggest influences on the iconic Budapest landscape was the rise of the Art Nouveau movement, which swept across Europe and defined the design of several emblematic avenues and buildings.

While most of these incredible architectural gems are still showing their original glory, and residents take pride in preserving the unique heritage, the city has also experienced revitalization and renewal in the last couple of years, including the building of the first skyscraper of the country.

Buda, situated on the hilly western bank, boasts a royal charm with its historic Castle District. It has a more chilled vibe, thanks to the vast amount of greenery, including nice hiking spots, impressive parks, and fun outdoor places. On the opposite side of the river lies Pest, a vibrant and bustling hub that pulsates with life, and it is the home of the famous party district, the Jewish Quarter, and the fabulous Andrássy Avenue area.

The sum of these seemingly two completely opposite parts give the city its special charisma which warms the heart of locals and attracts thousands of visitors from all around the world. Often referred to as „ the city of bridges”, Buda and Pest are connected by the total of 15 bridges, such as the well-known Chain Bridge which is currently being renovated.

Today, Budapest is not only a city of historical significance but also a vibrant cultural capital, which has world-famous musical festivals, world-class theatres and museums, as well as several different places where you can try the masterpieces of Hungarian cuisine!

Hungarian litterateur Ferenc Molnár is regarded as the most controversial writer of his time.

Hungarian litterateur Ferenc Molnár is regarded as the most controversial writer of his time. He’s probably the most well-known Hungarian playwright in the world, and his comedies are put on stage over and over again both in Hungary and abroad; however, his satirical prose has faded away over the years.

The Hungarian playwright was born 142 years ago.

Ferenc Molnár (originally Ferenc Neumann) was born into an upper middle class family in Budapest on 12 January 1878. After graduating from Lónyai Utca Reformed High School in 1895, his parents convinced him to study law in Geneva, but he turned his back on his university studies at 22 to realize his literary pursuits. He started to publish his writings in different Budapest-based newspapers, devote time to work on his novels and plays, and translate plays. His very first novel (The Derelict Boat, 1901) already bore the signature characteristics of his style: his witty remark, unique humour, and ingenuity. Literary critics had high hopes on Molnár who showed great promise as a novelist.

A few years later, he fulfilled the high expectations of litterateurs: he was only 29 when he wrote the fair copy of The Paul Street Boys (1906), today known as one of the most remarkable pieces of juvenile literature in the world. The novel follows the adventures of schoolboys in Budapest’s District VIII in 1889, who gather to spend their free time at the so-called grund, an empty lot which they consider their “Fatherland”. When the boys find out about the “Redshirts” (another boy gang from the neighbourhood) intention to take over the grund, they prepare to defend their playground. The Paul Street Boys, however, means much more today than an ordinary piece of juvenile literature: it is the ultimate story of Budapest children at the turn of the 19th century, as well as the humorous and sentimental depiction of distinct boy types. In fact, the main characters show such typical behaviour patterns that their names are often used today to describe certain types of people. For example, if we said “he’s like Ernő Nemecsek”, we would actually mean that he’s sensitive, polite and humble, but much braver than one would think.

The main works of Ferenc Molnár

The Paul Street Boys (1906)

The Devil (1907)

Liliom (1909)

The Guardsman (1910)

The Play’s the Thing (1926)

The Good Fairy (1930)

In his novels, Ferenc Molnár managed to give a realistic overview of the everyday life of the middle classes, the moral decay of the youth, and the struggles the poor needed to face in the early 20th century in Budapest. His plays, however, distracted attention from his fiction and quickly became the subject of debate.

As a playwright, Molnár used the triggers of emotional manipulation very consciously in the theatre: he was inspired by the works of international talents like Wilde, Schnitzler, Maeterlinck and Bernstein, and always merged what he had learnt into his signature comedies. Many of his plays (e.g.: The Devil, 1907, Liliom, 1909) revolve around the lies of the middle classes which he condemned with a great deal of understanding and wit. It is probably The Guardsman (1910) that expresses the main message of Molnár’s plays: the truth is intertwined with lies in a way that no one knows what’s right and wrong. The success of his first plays turned his head: Molnár started to focus on meeting the demand of the public that wanted no other than entertainment.

When the Nazism began to reach Hungary, he fled to France first, then moved to Switzerland, and eventually settled in New York, USA. He spent the last years of his life in deep depression, and as he was detached from his main source of inspiration, the middle classes of Budapest, he wrote stories of no importance. He died of cancer at the age of 74 in New York City.

If you ask us, it is important to treat your cultural appetite regularly. The place to visit doesn’t

If you ask us, it is important to treat your cultural appetite regularly. The place to visit doesn’t necessarily have to be an art exhibition, try to keep an open mind when it comes to something uncommon or exceptional instead. The below venues offer the x-factor: their exhibitions are fun, unusual, entertaining and fulfilling at the same time.

Hard Rock Cafe

Not only is it an incredibly successful, world-famous café and restaurant concept, HRC also serves as a museum, owning the largest private collection of Rock & Roll memorabilia in the world. With Jimi Hendrix’s poncho and Paul McCartney’s signed acoustic guitar displayed within reach, guests are always in for an incomparable dining experience. The bar’s metal-colored walls are decorated with pieces from the amazing, priceless collection of music memorabilia, that’s what makes Hard Rock Cafe an extraordinary exhibition hall. Free entry! (There’s no need to order anything.)

Pinball Museum

Who would’ve guessed that one of Budapest’s most popular tourist attractions would be a museum? The Pinball Museum, situated inside a cellar on Radnóti Miklós utca in Pest, is less like a museum and more like a retro arcade: with over 100 playable pinball machines (some of them dating from the 19th century), acquired from countries such as France, the United States and Portugal, and more than 30 arcade games, it is an awesome, interactive exhibition of fun. Once you are there, check out their newest addition, a supercool Budapest inspired pinball machine!

Selfie Museum

Yes, you read it well, there is a Museum of Sweets and Selfies in Budapest! Quoting from the founders, “there are some things that cannot be described by words” – this is exactly what crossed our minds when we found out about this establishment. It is something you have to experience. Other than cute installations, they made room for one of the city’s trendiest confectionaries as well. Hit them up whenever you feel like spicing up your mood, or if you are looking for an out of the ordinary venue for a special occasion.

Akvárium Klub is a veteran when it comes to CAFe Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival. This time the venue gives home to the performance of American-Jamaican talent Masego, the artist of South-African origins who takes pride in his roots. He is often compared to and mentioned as the fusion of Pharrell Williams, Michael Jackson and Jamie Foxx that is quite an accomplishment. Akvárium will also give home to a 3-day festival, Budapest Ritmo, featuring unique world music performances, outstanding workshops and an event called “showcase” introducing young talents.

After its sweeping triumph at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival earlier this year, the very first Hungarian contemporary circus company, Recirquel will debut its brand new show, My Land at CAFe Festival. Hungarian National Ballet’s Triple Dance trilogy featuring 3 of modern ballet’s most prominent figures, Johan Inger, Sharon Eyal and William Forsythe is also scheduled to be performed.

For those of you who desire to witness an innovative production we highly recommend Joan Catalá’s multi-award winning Pelat which you can catch at Budapest’s public spaces. Another, rather surrealist performance invites you to Trafó, where the Belgian Peeping Tom company’s Moeder (Mother) takes the stage with a performance that will creep under your skin. It’s spectacular, stunt-like scenes burn into the retina, resulting in a truly impressive show.
