Fiumei Road Cemetery

If Paris’s Père-Lachaise ever made you fall in love with cemeteries, Budapest’s very own Fiumei Road will feel like a kindred spirit. This hauntingly beautiful national memorial spans 56 hectares of sculptures, verdant avenues, and centuries of gripping stories told through tombstones and mausoleums. Guided tours are available for groups of more than 10 people; to arrange one, please contact regisztracio@nori.gov.hu. Rather go solo? Grab a map at the entrance and discover the place for free.

Art Nouveau Treasures of Budapest

Budapest’s Art Nouveau heritage is a feast for the curious eye – and Hosszúlépés’s themed walk is your most eloquent introduction to it. Meandering from Liberty Square to the eccentric Bedő House, the exquisite Postal Savings Bank, the ground-breaking Parisiana Dance Hall, and the ornate Kazinczy Synagogue, the tour illuminates how flora, fauna, and geometric audacity were etched into the city’s architectural soul.
Citadel Guided Panorama Tour

Perched high above the Danube, Gellért Hill’s Citadel – once a symbol of oppression – has witnessed Celtic settlers, martyred bishops, rumoured witch gatherings, and the brutal Siege of Budapest. This 60-minute guided walk unravels it all, including the surprising Soviet connection behind the Liberty Statue, before rewarding you with a sweeping panorama from the fortress rooftop that will leave you positively breathless. Tickets are available online.

Mihály Kolodko’s name is spreading far and wide, not just in Hungary but internationally too! His mini statues have become a must-see for many, adding a playful charm to the city. If you’re strolling through the streets of Budapest, keep your eyes peeled—you might just stumble upon one of his delightful little creations hiding in plain sight!

Yoda

One September morning, like a surprise from a galaxy far, far away, Mihály Kolodko’s latest creation popped up on a railing in the bustling Szent Gellért Square metro underpass. This time, it’s none other than Yoda from Star Wars—the wise and powerful Jedi Master who’s won over countless fans. True to Kolodko’s style, the choice of both location and character is no accident as it is situated near one of the top universities in the city.

1111 Budapest, Szent Gellért tér

Photo: Kolodko Art

Teddy

In the heart of downtown, at 6 Harmincad Street, stands the former British Embassy building, which proudly hosted the UK’s diplomatic mission in Budapest for an incredible 72 years. Things took a fun turn in November 2020 when this empty building welcomed a special new resident: Mr. Bean’s best buddy, his adorable stuffed bear Teddy, transformed into a charming bronze statue! And thanks to the creative locals, this little guy gets a wardrobe upgrade too! As the chilly weather rolls in, Teddy dons a cozy little scarf, keeping his spirits high and his style on point!

1051 Budapest, Harmincad utca 6.

Photo: Egy jó kép rólad

Rubik’s Cube

Ernő Rubik’s world-famous combination puzzle, the Rubik’s Cube, rolls endlessly and unstoppably down the side of one of the stairs leading from Bem Quay to the lower quay along the Danube. This mini statue, which pays tribute to one of Hungary’s greatest inventions, found its home in 2019, boasting an extraordinary view of the Parliament.

1011 Budapest, Batthyány tér

Photo: Kolodko Art –

Trabant

The title of this piece, “Forward to the past” is a clever play on words, referring to the “Back to the Future” film trilogy. In the movies, the iconic car is a DeLorean equipped with a flux capacitor, which turns it into a time machine for traveling to the past and future. But in this version, the car is a Trabant—the classic “people’s car” of the Eastern Bloc—with a “HU” country sticker on the back. What makes this mini statue extra special is its interactive feature: anyone can open and close the roof, adding a fun, hands-on element to the artwork.

1095 Budapest, Boráros tér

Photo: Kolodko Art

Kockásfülű nyúl (The Rabbit with Checkered Ears)

At the Buda Castle Funicular stop, perched on the castle wall with a trusty pair of binoculars, The Rabbit with Checkered Ears —the star of the Pannónia Film Studio series—keeps a playful watch over the city. This iconic character, a Saturday night favorite from 1977 to 1979, hopped into viewers’ hearts across two delightful seasons. Decades later, in the summer of 2018, the long-awaited third season finally arrived, and by November, the adorable mini statue of the rabbit had found a cozy new home on the castle grounds, where it continues to charm visitors.

Winnie the Pooh

In June 2023, everyone’s favorite bear, Winnie the Pooh, made his way to Damjanich Street in the heart of Budapest’s 7th district. Our beloved childhood hero now hangs from his favorite honey pot on the former home of Frigyes Karinthy, who contributed to the Hungarian translation. Fun fact: the bear cub, introduced to Hungarian readers in 1935, got his name, Micimackó from Emília Karinthy, nicknamed “Mici,” who worked on the original translation.

Budapest’s current fascinating look was heavily influenced by the stunning Art Nouveau Movement.

Budapest’s current look was heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau style that became popular around the turn of the 20th century, and you can still see its impact on many buildings and their interiors as you walk through the city. Join us on a journey back in time! With these various programs, you can travel to the early 1900s and explore the city as it once was.

Get Cozy: Gellért Thermal Bath

The stunning Art Nouveau-style Gellért Thermal Bath, finished in 1918, has a much longer history than you might expect. There’s been a bathhouse here since the 12th century, and even earlier, a medieval chronicle from the 10th century mentioned an ancient bath at this very spot. The healing powers of the Gellért waters were well-known even back then—legend has it, they even helped cure leprosy patients in a nearby hospital! In 1905, a design competition was held for the new bath building, and instead of choosing just one winner, the top three architects joined forces to create the magnificent structure we see today. Fun fact: within just 3 hours of its grand opening, over 200 people had already jumped into the new pools! These days, Gellért Bath is still the perfect place to unwind, especially during the colder months. With its outdoor pool, indoor thermal baths, swimming pool, saunas, and steam rooms, it’s an ideal spot to soak away the stress of everyday life in an absolutely gorgeous setting.

Afternoon Tea: Párisi Passage Restaurant

One of the most eye-catching and iconic buildings on Ferenciek Square has a fascinating history. The country’s first modern shopping arcade has gone through quite a few transformations before becoming the stunning landmark it is today. The building, with its mix of Moorish and Art Nouveau design, also showcases work from some of Hungary’s most renowned artisans of the time. Beneath the breathtaking arches of the Párisi Udvar is the Párisi Passage Restaurant, where you can enjoy afternoon tea daily from 2 to 5 PM. If you’re up for a fun time, you’ll get to relax in this elegant setting with freshly brewed tea, alongside a specially crafted selection of sandwiches and pastries. While you sip, indulge in scones, cakes, brioche or mini foie gras pâté—a true treat for your taste buds.

Wander & Wonder: Városligeti fasor

As you walk along Andrássy Avenue and its surroundings, you’ll spot plenty of elegant villas that instantly take you back to the grandeur of imperial Budapest at the beginning of the 20th century. The houses in the district’s villa neighbourhood hold countless stories and secrets, making them perfect for exploring on a leisurely stroll. Before Andrássy Avenue was completed in 1876, the only way for people to get to City Park for some fresh air was by walking down Király Street and its continuation, Városligeti Avenue. By the late 19th century, Andrássy Avenue, with its new underground railway, had become the main thoroughfare, while the once modest summer cottages along the avenue were replaced by beautiful villas built by Budapest’s wealthy bourgeoisie. So, bundle up, grab a hot coffee or tea, and take a walk through these streets, which feel like a journey back in time.

Cultural Catch-Up: Róth Miksa Memorial House and Collection

Miksa Róth was one of Hungary’s most renowned applied artists at the turn of the 20th century, celebrated for his exquisite stained-glass windows and mosaics, which can be found in many iconic buildings. He lived and worked in a downtown apartment, just a courtyard away from his studio, where his masterpieces came to life. After Róth’s death, his children donated his legacy to the district, and in 1999, the Róth Miksa Memorial House and Collection opened in his former home. The ground floor features an exhibition of his stained-glass work, offering a glimpse into his extraordinary career, while upstairs, the “Mosaics and Glass” exhibit showcases a portion of his glass art collection. One of the highlights of the museum is the apartment museum, which provides a true time-travel experience. The early 20th-century middle-class apartment not only tells the story of the Róth family but also offers insight into their lifestyle and daily life. For more, join a guided tour in English at the museum on November 30th at 11 AM. Visit their website for additional details.

Dine in Style: Bobo Restaurant

The stunning building at 6-7 Marczibányi Square, constructed in German Neo-Renaissance style in 1885, once housed a restaurant, a casino, and a ballroom. It was a favourite spot for the Budapest aristocracy, and even Queen Elisabeth (Sisi) visited here once. In the early 20th century, the shooting range was expanded, but World War II put a stop to further improvements. During the socialist years, the building was taken over by the Hungarian National Defense League. It was then used for training conscripts and, due to Cold War tensions, for drills with young students during national defense days. The impressive villa was renovated in 2016 and is surrounded by a large, beautifully maintained park with ancient trees, giving extra sparkle to the stunning place.
Jesuit Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The church, well known for its distinct red brick exterior, was designed in a French-Romanesque style by József Kauser, got its grand opening in 1909 and quickly became the heart of the Hungarian Jesuit community that very same year. After its inauguration, a vibrant religious community blossomed around the church, although it had to take a 30-year break during the socialist era. Since 1989, the church has been thriving once more, and its support has been unwavering. If you face the charming Szent Lőrinc Square, you’ll see the arched windows and decorations, all part of the Neo-Romanesque style.

Uránia National Film Theatre

The Uránia National Film Theatre isn’t your run-of-the-mill cinema; it’s a time machine that catapults you into a century-old cinematic wonderland. Back in 1895, it started as an orpheum tucked away in the lower floors of a charming apartment building. Fast forward to 1917, and voila, it officially transformed into a cinema. But here’s the real gem: it has been showcasing moving pictures since 1899, making it Hungary’s oldest continuously operating film theatre. Besides catching a flick, you can groove to a concert or get lost in a ballet performance in the spectacular screening rooms of the building.

Cave Church

For a captivating visit right at the heart of Budapest, make sure to explore the Gellért Hill Cave Church, a genuine national treasure. This historic sanctuary, completed in the spring of 1931 according to the visionary plans of Kálmán Lux and masterfully brought to life by Károly Weichinger, stands as a remarkable sight that’s not to be missed. Additionally, in 1934, a Neo-Romanesque-style monastery was added to the church, enhancing the entire experience.

Inner-City Parish Church

Budapest’s Inner-City Parish Church, also known as the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is located right in the busy hub of the city. Its adventurous history traces all the way back to the 14th century, and over the centuries, it even pulled double duty as a mosque. In the mid-1700s, it got a Baroque-style makeover that really spruced things up. You can actually join one of the guided tours in English to uncover all the secrets – the full scoop on the history and the mind-blowing architecture.

Since 1907, this lively place has proudly donned the name of the musical maestro Franz Liszt, celebrating the grand opening of the Academy of Music at number 8. On one side, you’ll discover a majestic statue of the legendary composer, and at the end of Andrássy Avenue, there’s the spirited presence of Endre Ady. This square, nestled right in the heart of the city, is a whirlwind of dining delights. You can hop from one quirky eatery to another, with options like the hip Menza, the lively Korhely, and the charming Café Viant. So, take a stroll, soak in the musical history, and savour the eclectic dining experiences in this bustling hub of Budapest!

House of Terror

Andrássy Avenue’s House of Terror is a real eye-opener! It’s set up in the very place where the communist secret police used to do their thing once the Soviets took over from Ferenc Szálasi’s Arrow Cross Party. Inside, there is a permanent exhibition that pays tribute to the people who suffered under both the Hungarian Nazis and the Communist regime. You can step into a little voting booth and catch a video about that fishy election that landed the Communist Party in charge. Or how about taking a seat on a courtroom bench? The walls are decked out with secret police records and if you’re up for it, you can venture down to the basement prison.

Heroes’ Square

Framed by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle, Hungary’s grandest square is an architectural wonder designed by the dynamic duo Albert Schickedanz and Fülöp Herczog. It all started in 1896 for the millennial celebrations, but the star of the show, the Millennium Memorial, didn’t make its debut until 1906. The Millennium Memorial is a stunner, with Archangel Gabriel atop a towering column, holding Hungary’s Holy Crown. There’s a crew of seven Hungarian chieftains on horseback, four allegorical figures, and 14 significant figures from Hungarian history in two colonnades.
