Many of us love sushi, that’s a fact. And though many of us have a craving for getting some heavenly rolls from time to time, we might not be all that familiar with the names, kinds and certain ingredients. To shed some light on the peculiarities of one of the most famous Japanese courses, we would like to give you a sushi guide, listing the most common types, hopefully giving you another reason to celebrate the International Sushi Day, held on 18 June across the globe.

One of the most amazing things about sushi that it can come in all kinds of shapes, flavours, consisting of a wide range of ingredients. Meat, vegetables, seafood or even tropical fruits can complete the taste of the delicately prepared rolls, but the key elements are always the same: brown or white rice and raw seafood. Another significant addition to the course are a bit of wasabi and soy sauce, of course.

Nigiri

The most famous sushi variety perhaps, consists of a piece of fish, seafood, vegetable or meat (the fish is usually raw while the seafood can be cooked), an oblong finger of slightly vinegared rice, spiced up with a bit of wasabi, with a fish roe or sea urchin topping, and the whole composition is wrapped in dried seaweed . Nigiri is actually the local specialty of Tokyo, that’s why it’s often referred to as Edomae, because the city was called “Edo” until 1868.

Maki

Even if you weren’t such a big fan of sushi, you must have heard of this type on several occasions as they can be found on each and every menu that has something to do with Japanese cuisine. The popular seaweed covered rolls are made with a bamboo mat, strips of tuna, cucumber or other ingredients along with a mass of vinegared rice. Yumm!

Sashimi

Sashimi often sounds confusing to many, when in fact, it’s nothing else than sliced raw fish served with shredded radish and other, different kinds of garnishing. It’s rather an appetizer than a main course, usually served with drinks. The most common meats served as Sashimi include: Salmon (Sake), squid (Ika), shrimp (Ebi), tuna (Maguro), octopus (Tako), whale Meat (Gei-niku), sea Urchin (Uni), scallop (Hotate-gai). puffer Fish (Fugu), yellowtail (Hamachi).

Oshi

A real specialty, coming all the way from Osaka. During the making process, a layer of fish is pressed onto a layer of rice in a wooden mold. Then the delicious sushi is cut into rectangular pieces.

Chirashizushi

Chirashizushi, meaning “scattered sushi” or “sushi rice salad”, is served in a bowl with rice, with several – usually 9 – kinds of toppings called “gu”. It’s a great way to use up leftovers, and as the recipe is not set in stone, you can be as creative as you want! Strangely, most of the Japanese households don’t make this meal with fish.

Unagi

If you’re a huge Friends fan, just like many of us in the editorial office, you’ll get this reference very quickly!

Just like fish and chips, curry is very popular in the UK. In fact, they have adopted curry as a “national dish”, with more than 9,000 Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants, according to its National Curry Week website. So it’s not surprising at all that curry has begun to conquer the local gastronomic scene, too.

Budapest, like many other capital cities, offers a good variety of local and international cuisine. When it comes to Asian food, Chinese and Japanese cuisine seem to predominate. According to TripAdvisor, there are only 35 Indian restaurants across the city. Compare that to the city of Vienna with 37, or to London with 943 Indian restaurants. (5 times more population but 44 times more Indian restaurants.)

Curry House, in Budapest, is an Indian restaurant located on Horánszky utca 1 in District VIII. This House of Indian Cuisines opened on 5 October back in 2013 with owner Zulkarnain Saer Khan.

Curry House is a sophisticated restaurant decorated with a colour scheme of black, red, bronze and gold. The restaurant has high ceilings throughout, giving a great sense of space. Its large glass windows all along the side make the place bright and welcoming. On one end of the restaurant, there is a large colourful hand-painted mural, of an Indian lady playing a sitar with an expression of peace and tranquillity. At the other end, there is a spacious area with a hexagonal Bajot table matched with Indian patchwork cushions. There are also various paintings, decorations and patterns on the restaurant walls, including a statue of Ganesh which adds to the generally friendly ambiance.

The menu of Curry House offers a wide selection of starters, specialities, tandoori kebabs, curries, naan breads, rice, international dishes, desserts and drinks. All the naan bread in Curry House is made the traditional way with a Tandoori Oven. It’s a cylindrical clay or metal oven, which Saer specially ordered from London.

The atmosphere in Curry House is relaxed and quite laid back. In such a charming and relaxing environment, it’s easy to succumb and while away time absorbing it. Curry House Budapest has a delicious mango lassi; it’s a creamy sweet drink made of yogurt, water and mango pulp. This helps quench the fiery taste of some dishes. There are also other flavours available such as strawberry and banana. Butter chicken is a classic Indian dish which you cannot miss out on in an Indian restaurant. The sauce is creamy and rich; leaving a deliciously mild sweet aftertaste in the mouth, making you want more. For dessert, try the Gulab Jamun; a fried milk flour sugar dough soaked in sugar syrup. The dough is juicy and soft, complementing the all-so-sweet sugar syrup.

If you have not tried curry before, then Curry House is your place to be! With so many different types of curry dishes to choose from, you will definitely find one that you’ll like.

Jiro Ono, the world’s greatest sushi chef said that “ The most important part of making good sushi is this: Creating a union between the rice and the fish.” This sounds simple, but it takes years of dedication, practice and enthusiasm to achieve it.
