A relatively new addition to the country’s summer festival list made a name for itself with its super cool atmosphere and the quite impressive line-up that manages to tempt many festivalgoers to the pretty town of Zamárdi. Let’s see some of the biggest artists who will take care of your entertainment this summer between 23 and 26 August!

They already performed at such renowned events as the UK’s Glastonbury Festival and will surely rock the stage of Strand on 24 August!

Perhaps the most well-known and highly praised representative of the electro-swing genre, the name Parov Stelar have become the synonym of the greatest combination of jazz, house, electro and breakbeat, transforming the nostalgic sounding tunes to the modern era – on 25 August at Strand!

Icona Pop

The electropop duo coming all the way from Sweden has amazed the world with their smash hit “I Love It”, making many dance and jump around the world to their funky tunes. Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo arrive to Strand on 25 August!

Wilkinson

Mark Wilkinson, the popular British drum and bass producer and DJ have flooded us with such awesome stuff as “Afterglow”, “Half Light”, or his recent song Wash Away. He will hypnotize you completely on 23 August!

Alan Walker

The only 19-year old Norwegian DJ reach the top of the charts with a song you have been humming or whistling for many months: “Faded”. Where are you now? – you can enjoy the magnetizing sound of Alan Walker on 23 August!

It may be difficult to enjoy the days of the hottest season in the concrete jungle of Budapest, mild

It may be difficult to enjoy the days of the hottest season in the concrete jungle of Budapest, mild summer evenings however are something we urge you not to miss. Watching the sun going down over the city while sipping some fine local wine is undoubtedly one of the favourite pastime activities of Hungarians and foreign visitors alike. Here are five of our beloved spots to enjoy the sunset views.

Fisherman’s Bastion

The Neo-Romanesque monument of Fisherman’s Bastion, which was built by Frigyes Schulek between 1895 and 1902, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Budapest. However, its architecture is not the only reason it is so admired. The panoramic view over the Danube, its bridges and the Hungarian Parliament building can be best enjoyed in the evenings when the skies are coloured pink and orange as the sun is going down. It is worth starting the walk in Buda Castle – possibly on a weekday to avoid the masses –, but make sure you arrive to the Bastion in time not to miss the sunset.

Danube Riverbank

Although the walk along the promenade between Margaret Bridge and Chain Bridge comes hand in hand with a splendid view over Buda hills at any time of the day, watching the sun go down behind the bygone buildings of Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church is an experience everyone should have once in their lifetime. As there aren’t many benches along the riverbank, be prepared to bring your own blanket and don’t forget to have a bottle of fine wine with you either.

High Note SkyBar

You can enjoy a great view from the Lookout Tower of the centrally located St. Stephen’s Basilica being one of the highest viewpoints of the Pest side. Unfortunately, the Lookout Tower closes at 6.30PM in the summer. However, there is a bar from which you can not only see the Basilica and the panorama of Pest, but taste first-class cocktails on the rooftop of Aria Hotel Budapest that was ranked by TripAdvisor as the best hotel in the world in 2016!

Liberty Bridge

As you may have heard, last summer Liberty Bridge, which happens to be one of the coolest ones in Budapest, was closed due to ongoing construction projects. However, cyclists and passengers were allowed to cross the bridge, which resulted in them having chill-out sessions in the weekends full of jamming musicians, hammocks hanging from the pillars and random garden parties. Many thought that this uniquely positive atmosphere should be kept this year as well, which is why local authorities agreed to close the bridge for several weekends in the summer of 2017. Don’t miss out on this special event; enjoy the view together with the crowds!

Citadel

The 235-meter high Gellért Hill located at the Buda side of Liberty Bridge overlooks the whole city including both Buda and Pest sides as well as the Danube dividing the Hungarian capital into two. On the way up the hill there are several hidden spots surrounded by lush greenery, while Citadella, a fortress built in 1851, can be found the top of the hill. You can arrive in time for sunset-watching and occupy one of the handful benches, sit on the walls of the citadel or in the grass.

Tip: 20 August, one of the biggest national holidays in Hungary usually celebrated with jolly parades and lustrous fireworks, is around the corner. The mentioned spots are perfect for watching the fireworks, as well!

This year’s motto of Sziget calls upon all festivalgoers of the planet. The Island of Freedom has become one of the most demanded events on the continent: the Hungarian Coachella does not only present an exclusive line-up of awesome concerts, but puts a spell on each visitor, coming from all around the world, with its special atmosphere. Let’s see who you can listen to at the exuberantly vibrating stages of Sziget this time around!

Rita Ora, 12 August, 6 PM

The British singer of Albanian origin comes to Budapest to boost up your summer to the max level: she will surely rock the Main Stage on the fourth day of the event.

Pink, 9 August, 9:30 PM

Last year it was Rihanna, in 2015 it was the charming daredevil Robin Williams and now it will be our favourite tireless rebel, P!nk coming to BP to open the festival with a kickass performance!

Jamie Cullum, 10 August, 4 PM

You might not be that familiar with the name of young, but nonetheless talented jazz-pop musician, who, among other great pieces, composed a song for Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino, too.

Clean Bandit, 12 August, 7:30 PM

With a massive line of hit songs, Clean Bandit has definitely made a name for itself by the inimitable style, transferring electronic music to be consumable for a wider audience. They’ll make you dance, without a doubt, coming all the way from Cambridge!

Alex Clare, 10 August, 11:45 PM

Too Close, his biggest success so far, climbed the charts in the wink of an eye and sent the bearded singer into outer space. He’ll be landing at Sziget Festival on 10 August!

Birdy, 15 August, 5:45 PM

The fragile looking British beauty with the voice of an angel enchants the audience: you can’t help listening to her, completely magnetized, mesmerized by the special world she sends forth by each tune.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, 12 August, 9:30 PM

The hip hop duo from Seattle have given us such fantastic songs as Thrift Shop that managed to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, back in 2013. They’ll bring down the house on 12 August!

You love to treat yourself with some sweet and hearty cake from time and time again but your birthday is still too far away, and you don’t want to go down the road of being a gluttonous cake-addict either? Lucky for you, there’s a big birthday bash coming in just a couple of weeks, revolving around your favourite thing: cakes!

Organized by the Association of Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers, Cake of Hungary is an annual celebration of the founding of the Hungarian state by St. Stephen, the first Christian king of the Hungarians. This year, August 20 will mark the 10th anniversary of the prestigious competition, the 979th anniversary of the canonization of St. Stephen, and the 1017th birthday of Hungary (even though there were some brief interruptions here – the century-and-a-half-long occupation by the Turks – and there – the time spent under Austrian control).

Since 2007, the Cake of Hungary is always presented to the public eye on 20 August, where it is symbolically cut into slices and onwards from that moment it is sold in hundreds of confectioneries and cake shops all around the country. Each year, the winning cake is selected by a renowned professional jury after a four-rounds filtering process. To win over the hearts of the sweet-toothed jury, the cake must not only have enough innovation, creativity and harmony, but it also has to incorporate a special and easily recognizable Hungarian flavor. The competition’s most successful confectioner has been László Zila, owner of Budapest-based Zila Café, who has four winning Cake of Hungary’s behind his back.

To find out what delicious and innovative calorie bomb was named as the Cake of Hungary this year, check out our website in the beginning of August!

Dr. Balázs Karafiáth was one of the most acknowledged figures on the field of online communication

Dr. Balázs Karafiáth was one of the most acknowledged figures on the field of online communication in Hungary. His name is attached to the foundation of Sziget Festival, he worked as an achor at Tilos radio, He lived in California for five years where he became a mindfulness and co-creative coach – a purpose guide according to his title. We sat down to discuss what this exactly means.

What do you think is the most important thing to tell about yourself? What can we find in the “about” section on your new website?

One of the biggest discoveries of my own self-exploration was that, in fact, “I am the captain of my soul” – and it can only be me. It was a certain self-reflection, a mindfulness practice that led me to this assignation. Slowing down my life helped me to recognize and believe that I can grab the wheel and learn to lead my own life. I’m not drifting, I’m sailing. What I can pass on to those who decide to see me builds on this very experience. The people who come to me want to become better at navigating themselves through different challenges. Many of them are already on the right track, wanting to conduct their “ship”, their business or their life in an even more conscious and responsible way.

How can you achieve this level of awareness?

Anyone who decided to consult with me has already took the most important step and reached the entry level of awareness: they reached out! They want to lead their life, or become better at this special leadership. I can give them a map that they can use and rely on. My work encompasses three topics: one isthe conscious- subconscious integration The things that block our progress are usually found in our subconscious. With different techniques and methods, jungian archetypes, meditative journeys or by dealing with the various ego-states , we can reach new resources in ourselves.

The second is“rewriting your story”, performing a narrative reconstruction. In this phase, we examine the self-image, the way you look at yourself and at the things that happen around us, what our options are and what bears importance to us.

The third topic is about purpose: exploring the deeper meaning of our life, our calling. I help my clients – in private or group sessions and I also work with big companies- to find their real purpose in their daily life or with regards to their leadership..

I am not a medical doctor, nor a psychologist, but a business man and a communications expert with good questions and a strong sense of purpose and responsibility. Besides Hungarian, I also hold English sessions – for example, I work with my American clients through an online video chat app called Zoom.

You learnt the method of hypnosis in California. Is this practicable through your online sessions as well?

Every hypnosis is self-hypnosis, it takes place in your own head. I can help you access new areas of your psyche. I don’t really like the word “hypnosis”, because it refers to something different than what it really is. There is no transfer of controlhere, which tends to be the main illusion in connection with hypnosis. In reality, your brain is capable of accessing a deeper level of focusing and thinking. You can reach that special place by hypnosis.

If someone needs your help, how can they reach out to you?

At first, we should sit down and decide if we would like to work together. It’s important for me to know that I can support your goals fully. I can only work you if I am your number one fan. Then I can provide the guidelines and the suitable environment for you to achieve your goals. We both need to know that you are truly determined before we embark on this journey. First I usually offer a program that consists of 5 appointments.

How do you deal with those who seem more sceptical about your methods? Are you willing to work with them, too?

I am a very sceptical man so I canidentify with sceptics very easily. I am offering a way of accessing a creative part of your brain that you don’t normally use. It also means that if you don’t want to do the work, it simply won’t work. I invite my clients to consider this an experiment and only trust the results.. If you’re the “right kind of” sceptical, the results will prove themselves!

Just imagine: you’re sitting on the cosy terrace of a boat, the gentle summer breeze is caressing your skin, you’re marvelling at the beautiful panorama that portrays the Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge as the blue waters of the Danube silently rippling underneath – now add a top -notch lunch to that picture and you get the lavish experience we had during our lunch at Spoon the Boat Restaurant.

We arrived to the 75 meter long floating restaurant in the early afternoon hours on an ordinary Thursday. The place, consisting of three kitchens, five bars, is open all year to serve both local and foreigner visitors with a deluxe representation of what the leading players of the region’s gastronomic scenery are able to provide: a sophisticated atmosphere that delivers a sense of relaxation even on the busiest weekdays, an attentive service, and, of course, a set of meals that are not only pretty close to perfection, but assembled in a fascinatingly creative way, too.

We started our lunch with a plate of baked paprika, goat cheese with pumpkin seed oil, arugula and a bowl of chilled mango soup, coconut espuma, marinated shrimp – both turned out to be vibrantly colourful and tasty. The first was simply magical with the crispy bites of goat cheese, baked paprika along with the seeds and the soup was like a Billie Holiday song: you could simply never get enough of it.

For the main course, we chose to go with two of their attractive fish meals: codfish, wilted spinach, mascarpone flavored venus clam and black spaghetti, salmon, caper with tomato. I have to say, I couldn’t recall the last time I had such a flawlessly made codfish and clam: they were soft in just the right way, lying on the bed of creamy spinach that give a real grand touch to the whole compilation. The black spaghetti with salmon topped with crispy cheese flakes was a course designed to gourmets and adventurous tasters alike. Then came the point when we seriously had to reconsider our capabilities of consuming the desserts we previously picked, because the first two rounds were not only rich in taste, but quite big, filling portions as well. Obviously. there was no way to resist the finishing touch to our boat trip: a cup of Ferrero – Raffaello and another scoop of sweetness called Pistachio, Sesame, Peach. The trinity of those was something I, an admirer of everything that has pistachio in it, became interested in, the minute I had first laid eyes on the menu and the creamy green composition didn’t disappoint me. As the manager stepped by to welcome us, we got a little background information on how the pistachio used in the mousse comes all the way from Italy, where it is regarded as one of the best ones in the world to ensure that the guests of Spoon have the full taste of what the little culinary nut has to offer. The Ferrero – Raffaello was also a real treat with its smooth and velvety texture and a whirl of savours nested in the cup of complete seduction.

With a full belly, we decided to stay inside our happy bubble of this soothing environment to take a glass of Vylyan Winery’s rosé and we let the view put our mind at ease. You simply can’t get tired of this feeling that mixes the architectural beauties with a sense of freedom, as if you were about to break free from your daily tasks.

If you would like to find the most magical spot to spend the night of 20 August at, Spoon the Boat Restaurant is a great choice by all means. You won’t complain about the meals or the waiters’ attentiveness and the fireworks will surely be quite a spectacle, too. So, bid farewell to all your troubles and hear the sweet melodies of the Danube, while having a spoonful of brilliance in your mouth!

To be honest, it’s quite difficult not to go into Hababa Store, especially if you’re an art and fashion enthusiast. It looks rather big for a designer shop: the spacious, bright and airy inner place presents a colourful world that is completely irresistible, even if you just happen to be passing by the store window.

Stepping through the door, a friendly atmosphere welcomes everyone, along with the nicely attentive shop assistants, offering a glass of cold lemonade on humid summer days – which was a truly nice surprise. I only became more fascinated by the awesome spot after having a chat with the owners.

Hababa Designer Store and Gallery is a unique showroom with a progressive approach, presenting carefully selected local and western designer brands, vintage and second hand pieces. Besides the fabulous items, you can also find a picture and a short description of their creators – that actually makes shopping here a special, much more intimate experience. The owners also aimed to promote young, ambitious talents, so you can find the works of less known Hungarian designers. The store is also an art venue and often makes a home for workshops and exhibitions.

Their selection is, without a doubt, impressive: you can find a wide range of styles, from the more extreme works to vintage or second hand stuff, and fast fashion items you could see nowhere else in the country. According to Hababa’s philosophy, we need clothes from all of these categories: you can’t only wear designer pieces all the time, there is a place in the wardrobe for fast fashion or second hand dresses, too.

It was love at first sight for us, make sure you don’t miss out on the Hababa experience, either!

The Tribali experience culminates in all its worth during the band’s performances, with an array of movement, colour and dynamic sounds that leave the audience enthralled for days.

The versatility in musical genres presented in their songs is a key contributor to the band’s success. Indeed, the spectrum of styles ranges from tribal to rock, to ska and psychedelic, allowing the band to attract audiences from all generations. Tribali’s efforts to leave ample space for crowd interaction during their concerts leave the audience feeling like they participated in making the live experience an unforgettable one, full of positive energy.

Having performed in a variety of festivals, including Glastonbury, the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia, the Ancient Trance Music Festival in Germany and Earth Garden, Tribali has slowly made their mark on the international music scene for years. Nevertheless, Summer 2015 represented an important development as the band went on their first summer tour, performing in Turkey, Hungary, Finland and Sicily.

Following a change in the band’s line-up, Summer 2016 has helped to further develop Tribali’s international presence. A few of this year’s highlights included their second time headlining Everness Festival, a sold out performance in the world-renowned A38 Ship in Budapest and memorable performances in Spain and Portugal as part of the Festival Sete Sois Sete Luas.

This year Tribali returns to A38 on 27 July, click here for more!

At the picturesque Main Square of Óbuda, you can find the Gázlámpa Kioszk (Gaslight Kiosk), also known as the smallest café of Budapest. Just three stops from Margaret Bridge, at the foot of Árpád Bridge on the Buda side, you will find yourself at a cobbled piazza with this unique-looking, almost hundred years old industrial monument in the middle, so you can taste the atmosphere of Budapest before the world wars. This former gas transfer station has been turned into a cosy café serving cold refreshments, Italian ice cream and coffee specialties.

And to a special place belongs a special blend, as well. The Esernyős 42 Blend is made from light roasted coffee-beans, selected from Brasil, Rwanda and Ethiopia and prepared with the „Ferrari” of espresso machines, La Marzocco coffee machine. This coffee is made only at these few square meters in Hungary. While the guests are sipping their coffee under the parasols, they can enjoy the timeless atmosphere of Óbuda .

The small café has been renovated in 2015, and it’s the busiest during the summertime and Advent. Under this only 4 square meter kiosk is hidden a basement that serves as a storage for beer barrels, refrigerators and beverages, so the kiosk is actually a kind of „magic box”. The Gázlámpa Kioszk is one of the best examples of urban renewals insomuch that it got the prize of the professional jury of BVA as „the best pop-up terrace” of Budapest.
