You love to treat yourself with some sweet and hearty cake from time and time again but your birthday is still too far away, and you don’t want to go down the road of being a gluttonous cake-addict either? Lucky for you, there’s a big birthday bash coming in just a couple of weeks, revolving around your favourite thing: cakes!
Organized by the Association of Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers, Cake of Hungary is an annual celebration of the founding of the Hungarian state by St. Stephen, the first Christian king of the Hungarians. This year, August 20 will mark the 10th anniversary of the prestigious competition, the 979th anniversary of the canonization of St. Stephen, and the 1017th birthday of Hungary (even though there were some brief interruptions here – the century-and-a-half-long occupation by the Turks – and there – the time spent under Austrian control).
Since 2007, the Cake of Hungary is always presented to the public eye on 20 August, where it is symbolically cut into slices and onwards from that moment it is sold in hundreds of confectioneries and cake shops all around the country. Each year, the winning cake is selected by a renowned professional jury after a four-rounds filtering process. To win over the hearts of the sweet-toothed jury, the cake must not only have enough innovation, creativity and harmony, but it also has to incorporate a special and easily recognizable Hungarian flavor. The competition’s most successful confectioner has been László Zila, owner of Budapest-based Zila Café, who has four winning Cake of Hungary’s behind his back.
